Meromorphic modular differential equations for the elliptic genus of Calabi--Yau varieties

Abstract

We study differential equations -- not necessarily monic -- for Jacobi modular forms. As an application, we derive a second-order differential equation for the elliptic genus of a $K3$ surface involving the logarithmic derivative of the modular invariant $j(τ)$, and we explicitly find a third-order equation with a leading coefficient of weight 12 for the elliptic genus of any four-dimensional Calabi--Yau variety. Furthermore, we propose a simple recursive algorithm for investigating second-order differential equations with leading coefficient $E_4(τ)$ or $E_6(τ)$.

Automorphisms of Plane Curves defined from Chebychev polynomials

For any $d\geq 4$ we determine the automorphism groups of the algebraic curves \[ \mathcal{C}_d : y^d = φ_d(x), \] where $φ_d(x)$ denotes the Chebyshev polynomial of degree $d$, defined over a field $k$ with $p:=\operatorname{char}(k) \nmid 2d$. For $d>4$, it is $\mathbb{Z}/d\mathbb{Z}\times\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$, except when $2d=p^r+1$ or $4d=p^r+1$ for some $r\geq 1$. In these cases it is, respectively, $(\mathbb{Z}/d\mathbb{Z}\times\mathbb{Z}/d\mathbb{Z})\rtimes S_3$ and $\mathbb{Z}/d\mathbb{Z}\times S_3$. Two ingredients used here are a description of all total inflection points on $\cC_d$, and knowledge of the group of fractional linear transformations that preserve the set of zeros of $φ_d$.

On the complement of nef divisors on projective manifolds

Let $X'$ be a complex projective manifold, $\dim X'>1$, $Z$ a connected analytic subset of codimension one which is the support of a nef effective Cartier divisor $D$ on $X'$, $X:=X'\setminus Z$. Let $κ(D)$ be the Iitaka dimension of $D$. We prove that $X$ is not Hartogs if and only if $D$ is abundant and $κ(D)=1$. In particular, $X$ is not Hartogs if and only if $X$ is a proper fibration over an affine curve.

A remark on the Moduli of parabolic connections

We consider the moduli space of stable parabolic connections of full flag type with generic rational weights on a compact Riemann surface $X$ of genus $g \ge 3$, with singularities along the parabolic points. We compute the Chow groups of the fixed determinant moduli space consisting of parabolic connections whose underlying parabolic bundle is stable. We show that the moduli space of stable parabolic connections is not rationally connected, whereas the fixed determinant moduli space is rationally connected and in fact rational. We also prove that the determinant map to the Picard variety is universal among morphisms to abelian varieties. Finally, we show that the algebraic group of rank one holomorphic connections acts trivially on the cohomology of the moduli space of stable parabolic connections.
