Structure and Dynamics of Defects in Two-Dimensional Nematic Liquid Crystals
Abstract
Topological defects in nematic liquid crystals have recently received renewed interest due to their important role in non-equilibrium active materials and developing biological systems. While many studies have focused on simulating defect behaviors in these non-equilibrium situations, there has also been recent progress in our analytical understanding of defect morphology and behavior in a number of complicated regimes, such as intricate boundary conditions, anisotropic elasticity, or the presence of flows. Here, we review the analytical theory of disclination structure and dynamics in two-dimensional nematic liquid crystals, highlighting recent methods and results.
