Invariant pseudo-unitary matrix ensembles and local statistics and conductance fluctuations of the DMPK ensemble

Abstract

We consider the DMPK ensemble, which models quantum transport in a disordered wire, and describe its limiting local statistics as the number of particles tends to infinity. In the metallic regime, as well as at crossover I, we obtain sine statistics in the bulk, Bessel statistics at the hard edge and Airy statistics at the soft edge. In the insulating regime, we prove localization around certain explicit deterministic positions with Gaussian fluctuations. This confirms and quantifies the predicted universal and localized behavior in the physics literature. At crossover II, we obtain explicit limiting kernels in the bulk and at both edges, which interpolate between these regimes. The hard edge kernel involves Legendre functions and, to the best of our knowledge, is new, while the bulk and soft edge kernels agree with those derived for the squared singular values of critically scaled products of independent Ginibre matrices. To explain these similarities, we construct a class of invariant pseudo-unitary matrices that is closed under taking products and use it to interpret the DMPK ensemble as the joint density of the spectral variables of a product of such random matrices. More generally, the latter takes the form of a polynomial ensemble of derivative type involving a second order differential operator compatible with the Legendre functions. Finally, we obtain uniform asymptotic expansions of the mean and variance of the conductance and prove that the DMPK ensemble admits universal conductance fluctuations, i.e. the variance of the conductance tends to $1/15$ throughout the whole metallic regime. This again confirms the predictions in the physics literature.

Langevin equations solved by Markov chains (instead of integrals), two solutions with multiplicative noise and their properties

Langevin equations are usually understood as integral equations, since continuous and Markov solutions are nowhere differentiable. This is avoidable by the fact that white Gaussian noise can be seen as a generalized derivative of the Wiener process. The simplest LE is thus solved by Wiener paths, which can be computed by a Markov chain. That crucial property persists for functions of these paths, and solutions of the general LE are therefore assumed to have that form. In short time steps these functions must be linear or quadratic. Both cases lead to sampled versions of existing stochastic intrgrals ('Ito' and 'anti-Ito' respectively). In physics they apply for Brownian motion in presence of a temperature gradient: without a feedback to the medium in the linear case, and for a tagged molecule in the quadratic one; in the latter case the Fokker-Planck equation describes a local equilibrium.

Diffusion Processes on $p$-Wasserstein Space over Banach Space

To study diffusion processes on the p-Wasserstein space $\mathscr P_p$ for $p\in [1,\infty)$ over a separable, reflexive Banach space $X$, we present a criterion on the quasi-regularity of Dirichlet forms in $L^2(\mathscr P_p,Λ)$ for a reference probability $Λ$ on $\mathscr P_p$. It is formulated in terms of an upper bound condition with the uniform norm of the intrinsic derivative. We find a versatile class of quasi-regular local Dirichlet forms on $\mathscr P_p$ by using images of Dirichlet forms on the tangent space $L^p(X\to X,μ_0)$ at a reference point $μ_0\in\mathscr P_p$. The Ornstein--Uhlenbeck type Dirichlet form and process on $\mathscr P_2$ are an important example in this class. We derive an $L^2$-estimate for the corresponding heat kernel and an integration by parts formula for the invariant measure.

Convergence of stochastic integrals with applications to transport equations and conservation laws with noise

Convergence of stochastic integrals driven by Wiener processes $W_n$, with $W_n \to W$ almost surely in $C_t$, is crucial in analyzing SPDEs. Our focus is on the convergence of the form $\int_0^T V_n\, \mathrm{d} W_n \to \int_0^T V\, \mathrm{d} W$, where $\{V_n\}$ is bounded in $L^p(Ω\times [0,T];X)$ for a Banach space $X$ and some finite $p > 2$. This is challenging when $V_n$ converges to $V$ weakly in the temporal variable. We supply convergence results to handle stochastic integral limits when strong temporal convergence is lacking. A key tool is a uniform mean $L^1$ time translation estimate on $V_n$, an estimate that is easily verified in many SPDEs. However, this estimate alone does not guarantee strong compactness of $(ω,t)\mapsto V_n(ω,t)$. Our findings, especially pertinent to equations exhibiting singular behavior, are substantiated by establishing several stability results for stochastic transport equations and conservation laws.
