Cosmological Bounds on the Generalized Uncertainty Principle from the CMB

Abstract

We constrain the deformation parameter $β$ of the Generalized Uncertainty Principle with cosmological observations. A quadratic deformation of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle modifies the Friedmann equations of $Λ$CDM and gives rise to a phenomenological dynamical dark energy with a single free parameter, $β$. To avoid a singular behaviour for the effective dark energy equation of state parameter, we restrict the prior to non-negative values of $β$. Using Planck 2018 CMB temperature and polarization data together with DESI DR2 BAO and Pantheon+SH0ES supernovae, we find the upper limit $β<0.00728~$ at $68\%$ confidence interval. The resulting cosmological model fits the data slightly better than $Λ$CDM, providing smaller value for the $χ_{min}^{2}% $, such that the Akaike Information Criterion to suggest statistical equivalency between the two models, although the Bayesian evidence favours the $Λ$CDM. Finally, the quadratic Generalized Uncertainty Principle does not alleviate the $H_{0}$ tension, it reduces the tension to $4.8σ$, that is, due to the small correlation between the $H_{0}-β$ parameters.

A Machine Learning Approach to Finslerian Cosmological Dark Energy Model

Modified extensions of the standard cosmological models often introduce complex parameter degeneracies that severely impact sampling convergence of the parameter space while analyzing the model observationally. In this work, we present an accelerated Bayesian inference technique using a Heteroscedastic Deep Ensemble with Monte Carlo Dropout incorporating distance-gated local residual corrections to emulate complex likelihood surfaces and avoid extrapolation beyond the trained region. We demonstrate this methodology on a unified dark energy cosmological model equipped with Finsler geometry. The model is studied using the recent observational datasets, including Cosmic Chronometers (CC), Pantheon$+$SH$0$ES, and DESI DR$2$ BAO measurements. While the conventional sampling procedure struggles with slow mixing of parameter chains ($τ_{max}=1578.3$), the neural network, specially trained densely in high likelihood regions, yields converged and highly resolved posterior distributions of the model parameters without significantly compromising the minimum chi-square value. We further discuss the results for physical inferences and also compare the present dark energy model with $Λ\text{CDM}$ statistically using AIC and BIC.

Sweep-Direction-Dependent Level-Attraction- and Level-Repulsion-Like Signatures in a Twisted, Helically Corrugated Microwave Resonator

We investigate photon--photon interactions in a mechanically tunable, helically corrugated rectangular microwave resonator. Mechanical twisting modifies the electromagnetic helicity and resonant frequencies of the supported modes, allowing pairs of electromagnetic modes to be tuned into near-degeneracy. Transmission magnitude and phase measurements reveal two distinct responses: a level-attraction-like response characterised by converging antiresonances and a sharp phase variation appearing as a $2π$ discontinuity in the wrapped transmission phase, and a level-repulsion-like response characterised by an anticrossing-like transmission feature. For the mode-interaction regions investigated, reversing the twist sweep direction interchanges these responses. We discuss mechanical hysteresis and changes in electromagnetic backscattering and modal interference as possible origins of this behaviour. These observations suggest a potential route towards microwave devices with mechanically switchable level-attraction-like and level-repulsion-like transmission responses.

Gravitational Redshift of Light and the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle

Empirical observations together with theoretical analyses are being used to argue that the classical phenomenon of gravitational redshift -- namely, the redshift of light in a static gravitational potential -- may be in tension with the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. In particular, in the Pound-Rebka experiment, the emitter-absorber pair interact with each other by exchanging a Mossbauer photon, a process that is fully describable within quantum mechanics but how the photon interacts with the spacetime metric remains unclear. Since the uncertainty principle is incompatible with local realism, as per general relativity, we propose to study continuous-variable photonic entanglement within the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) framework in a weak gravitational field. We outline a thought experiment, realizable on the surface of the Earth, that could shed further light on this problematic seamline between general relativity and quantum mechanics in the weak-field regime.
