Chiral near-fields at achiral plasmonic tips enable nanoscale valley polarimetry

Abstract

Optical helicity is central to chiral light-matter interactions, yet plasmonic confinement typically distorts it at the nanoscale. Here, we demonstrate nanoscale valley polarimetry using an achiral Au tip, where incidence-angle control of circularly polarized light creates a strongly localized, helicity-preserving near-field. Chiral tip-enhanced photoluminescence (c-TEPL) directly resolves and reverses local valley polarization in monolayer WSe2 and reveals nanoscale polarization variations in strained MoS2 hidden by diffraction-limited measurements.

Generalized Spin Groups and Applications to Magnons

Spin groups provide the natural symmetry framework for the isotropic Heisenberg model, in which spin and lattice degrees of freedom are separable. They have recently found broad applications in describing electronic band structure, magnon band topology, and transport phenomena. However, a typical spin Hamiltonian describing magnons contains not only isotropic Heisenberg exchange but also anisotropic interactions induced by spin-orbit coupling (SOC), including the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction, the Gamma exchange, and the single-ion anisotropy (SIA), which strongly influence magnon properties. More recently, some studies have also revealed relativistic magnon transport phenomena in altermagnets. Such systems typically exhibit partial spin-lattice locking, but are commonly assumed to be described by conventional magnetic groups. Here, we develop a systematic symmetry framework, generalized spin groups, for magnons. We first classify the symmetries of Heisenberg, DM, Gamma, and SIA interactions. The resulting classification contains 6 spin-only groups, together with a total of 161 nontrivial spin groups. The symmetries of magnetically ordered phases are then obtained through spontaneous symmetry breaking of the corresponding parent groups for spin Hamiltonians. We also identify 6 spin-only groups for ordered states, which generate 90, 264, 157, 264, 387, and 598 nontrivial spin groups, respectively. Finally, we apply generalized spin groups to the magnon thermal conductivity and spin conductivity tensors and derive all the symmetry-allowed forms. Our results provide a unified symmetry framework for analyzing magnon transport both with and without SOC, yielding more refined constraints on magnon responses.

Two quantum skyrmions form a magnon Josephson junction

Two quantum skyrmions in a frustrated spin-$1/2$ magnet bind into a molecule, and the molecule acts as a magnon Josephson junction: the relative helicity $θ$ and the number $n$ of magnons transferred between them obey $H=E_Cn^2-W\cosθ$. DMRG on the $J_1$--$J_2$ triangular lattice gives $E_C$ as the curvature of the skyrmion energy at its natural size of seven flipped spins, and the measured helicity coherence fixes $W\simeq0.02J_1$, half the skyrmion--antiskyrmion tunnel splitting and independent of the anisotropy. Two helicity qubits side by side are thus strongly coupled by their own interaction.

A project of the thermal triple axis spectrometer at the PIK reactor

A project of the novel thermal triple axis spectrometer IN1 at the PIK reactor is presented. Monte Carlo simulations were used for optimization its main parameters. The optimization of the instrument gives an estimated neutron flux as high as 109 n/cm2/s at the sample position at neutron energy about 36 meV at the designed 100 MW power. The modelling of neutron stages like monochromators, analyzers, virtual source, as well as instrument shielding was fulfilled to obtain the best performance of the spectrometer.
