Reconstructing the Jordan structure of $C^*$-algebras from the metric on positive unit spheres

Abstract

Let $A$ and $B$ be unital $C^*$-algebras, and let $\mathrm{S}_{A^+}$ and $\mathrm{S}_{B^+}$ denote their positive unit spheres. We first show that the diametral relation on the positive unit sphere already determines Jordan structure. More precisely, suppose that $Λ:\mathrm{S}_{A^+}\to\mathrm{S}_{B^+}$ is a bijection satisfying \[ \|Λ(u)-Λ(v)\|=1 \quad\Longleftrightarrow\quad \|u-v\|=1 \qquad (u,v\in\mathrm{S}_{A^+}). \] If $A$ has no two-dimensional irreducible $^*$-representation, then $A$ and $B$ are Jordan $^*$-isomorphic. Moreover, the Jordan $^*$-isomorphism can be chosen to be compatible with $Λ$ on the peak and zero projections of positive norm-one elements. The proof is based on recovering the order and orthogonality structure of Akemann closed projections in the bidual. As a main application, we give an affirmative answer to the positive-sphere extension problem for unital $C^*$-algebras of real rank zero. Namely, if $A$ has real rank zero (but could has two-dimensional irreducible $^*$-representations) and $Λ:\mathrm{S}_{A^+}\to\mathrm{S}_{B^+}$ is a surjective isometry, then $Λ$ extends to a Jordan $^*$-isomorphism from $A$ onto $B$.

Remarks on Derivations on Maximal Triangular Operator Algebras

This note concerns bounded derivations on maximal triangular operator algebras on a Hilbert space. Given any bounded derivation $δ$ on a maximal triangular algebra whose invariant lattice is continuous at 1, an operator which is shown to implement $δ$ is constructed explicitly. For a general reducible maximal triangular algebra the same construction yields an operator which is shown to implement any $δ$, if and only if $δ$ obeys an additional triple product rule. This work is based on unpublished parts of the author's dissertation [19] and describes a variant of the proof of a more general result in [21] and is thus in effect a footnote to that work. To the best of the author's knowledge the constructive proof and triple product rule have not appeared elsewhere. The work here is not set in the context of the large body of subsequent research, and no claims are made regarding its relationship to later developments.

Hilbert transforms on graph products of finite von Neumann algebras

We study Hilbert transforms on graph products of finite von Neumann algebras, with particular interest in their boundedness on the associated noncommutative $L_p$-spaces for $1<p<\infty$. We establish a generalized Cotlar identity for Hilbert transforms, valid on operators whose lengths exceed a constant depending only on the underlying graph. We further prove that graph products of finite von Neumann algebras satisfying a Haagerup-type inequality admit $L_p$-bounded Hilbert transforms, therefore extending the corresponding result of Mei and Ricard for free products of finite von Neumann algebras. In addition, we obtain several equivalent characterizations of this Haagerup-type inequality. Our results apply, in particular, to graph products of finite groups, right-angled Hecke von Neumann algebras, and graph products of finite quantum groups. As an application, we provide a complete characterization of a compactness problem posed by Ozawa for graph products of finite groups and right-angled Hecke von Neumann algebras.

On the generators of separable unital C*-algebras

Let $A$ be a separable unital $\mathrm C^*$-algebra with nonempty tracial state space and strict comparison by ordinary tracial states. If $\mathcal Z$ embeds unitally into $A$, then $A$ is singly generated. In particular, every simple separable unital $\mathrm C^*$-algebra $A$ with $\mathrm T(A)\ne\varnothing$ and strict comparison is singly generated.
