Rational $S$-functions for second order ODEs with non-Liouvillian first integrals

Abstract

The $S$-function method for rational second order ODEs $y''=φ(x,y,y')$ uses $S=I_y/I_z$, attached to a first integral $I$, which satisfies a Riccati equation along the flow; it was designed for Liouvillian $I$. We study the case of rational $S$ with non-Liouvillian $I$. From any rational $g(x,y,z)$ with $g_z\neq0$ and any linear equation $A_2w''+A_1w'+A_0w=0$ with polynomial coefficients, the substitution $w'/w=g(x,y,y')$ yields a rational 2ODE whose first integral is built from two independent solutions, and $S=g_y/g_z$: the Wronskian cancels, so $S$ does not see the linear equation, and one rational $S$ is shared by equations with and without Liouvillian first integrals. Conversely, given $(φ,S)$, membership in this class reduces to a rational first integral of an explicit planar vector field plus a Möbius-invariant Riccati test in $x$, which recovers the linear equation. A transfer theorem shows that $I$ is Liouvillian if and only if this equation has a Liouvillian solution, so Liouvillianity is decidable on the class by Kovacic's algorithm: a three-variable problem with no a priori degree bound is reduced to two classical ones. On nine pull-back equations of degree up to $15$, given without information on their construction, the procedure recovers the Airy equation and the Bessel equation of order zero.

Counterexamples for lacunary dilates via dyadic spike blocks

We construct counterexamples, along dyadic lacunary sequences, to two problems of Erdős on the almost-everywhere behavior of sums $\sum_{j\le N}f(n_jx)$ on the circle. The main device is a dyadic spike block: rare positive spikes, each counted many times by a run of consecutive dilates, make the lacunary averages large, while a deterministic lower bound on every block prevents the rest of the series from cancelling them. We obtain a mean-zero $f\in\bigcap_{1\le q<\infty}L^q(\mathbb T)$ and a sequence $n_j=2^{m_j}$ with $n_{j+1}/n_j\ge2$ such that $\|f-S_Nf\|_2\ll(\log\log N)^{-1/2}$ and $\limsup_{N\to\infty}\frac1N\sum_{j\le N}f(n_jx)=+\infty$ for almost every $x$. This answers negatively a question of Erdős on whether the condition $\|f-S_Nf\|_2\ll(\log\log\log N)^{-C}$ suffices for almost-everywhere convergence, and shows that Matsuyama's condition $\|f-S_Nf\|_2\ll(\log\log N)^{-c}$, $c>1/2$, cannot be relaxed to $c=1/2$. A second choice of parameters gives, for every $2\le p<\infty$, functions $f\in L^p(\mathbb T)$ with $\limsup_{N\to\infty}\sum_{j\le N}f(n_jx)/(N(\log N)^{1/p-\varepsilon})=+\infty$ for every $\varepsilon>0$, almost everywhere. This is sharp up to $\varepsilon$, and the case $p=2$ answers negatively a second question of Erdős. Finally, a bounded variant in the spirit of Marstrand's disproof of Khintchine's conjecture gives sets of arbitrarily small measure whose lacunary visiting frequencies have limsup $1$ almost everywhere.

Weighted $H^p-L^q$ boundedness of integral operators with rough kernels

In this paper, we study integral operators \begin{equation*} T_αf(x)=\int_{\mathbb{R}^{n}}K(x,y) f(y)dy, \end{equation*} with kernels $K(x,y)= k_1( x- A_1y)...k_m( x-A_my),$ where $k_i(x)=\frac{Ω_i(x)}{|x|^{n/q_i}}$ and $Ω_i: \mathbb{R}^n\to \mathbb{R}$ are homogeneous functions of degree zero, satisfying a size and a Dini condition, $A_{i}$ are certain invertible matrices, and $\frac n{q_1}+\dots+\frac n{q_m}=n-α,$ $0\leq α<n.$ We obtain the $H^{p}_{w^p}(\mathbb{R}^{n})-L^{q}_{w^q}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$ boundedness of these operators, for a class of Muckenhoupt weights $w$, satisfying the condition \begin{equation*} w(A_ix)\leq cw(x), \end{equation*} $a.e.x\in\mathbb{R} ^n $, $1\leq i\leq m$.

Characterization of the boundedness of the segment multiplier on rearrangement-invariant spaces

Given rearrangement-invariant (r.i.) spaces $X$ and $Y$, we show that the segment multiplier, the truncated Hilbert transform, and the discrete Hilbert transform (on the associated discretized space) are bounded from $X$ to $Y$ simultaneously. Moreover, when $X = Y$ this boundedness is characterized by a condition on a pair of Boyd-type indices. We also exhibit an r.i. space on which the segment multiplier is bounded while the (non-truncated) Hilbert transform fails to be bounded.
