Non-singlets and the phase diagram of Matrix Quantum Mechanics

Abstract

The quantum mechanics of one $N\times N$ Hermitian matrix in the infinite $N$ limit is well known to define a two-dimensional string theory when the quartic coupling constant $g$ is tuned to a special negative value $g_*$. We study the thermodynamics of this Matrix Quantum Mechanics (MQM), treating the SU$(N)$ symmetry as a global symmetry. Crucially, the non-singlets, i.e. states in non-trivial representations of SU$(N)$, implement the effects of vortices on the discretized worldsheets. This random lattice model has the low-temperature $c=1$ and high-temperature $c=0$ phases, with the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition separating them. We map out the phase diagram in the coupling--temperature plane, which is separated by the critical stability curve $T_c(g)$ extending from $g_*< g <0$. We study this curve using the non-perturbative matrix bootstrap and low- and high-temperature perturbation theory, which explain the thermal instability. At low temperatures, thermally excited non-singlets backreact on the Fermi sea of matrix eigenvalues, causing it to spill over. At high temperatures, the theory is described by an effective matrix integral obtained by dimensional reduction on the thermal circle; the eigenvalue distribution of the zero mode becomes unstable at the critical coupling. We conjecture that the BKT transition occurs at a special point on the critical curve and estimate its position. Finally, we switch to the regular square lattice and study the MQM-inspired Villain model, where the link factor is the one-dimensional propagator on a circle. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we map out the BKT transition in this model.

Charged Black-Hole Binary Evolution at Second Post-Newtonian Order

We study the dynamics of electrically charged black-hole binaries and their gravitational-wave emission during the inspiral phase. Within the post-Newtonian framework, we derive the conservative and dissipative dynamics up to second order (2PN), combining Effective Field Theory and classical methods. We compute the NNLO conservative Lagrangian, LO dissipative effects in harmonic and Lorenz gauges, and provide the equations of motion, center-of-mass transformations, and the Lagrangian/Hamiltonian in ADM-type coordinates. We also obtain gauge-invariant expressions for the binding energy, periastron advance in quasi-circular orbits, and the scattering angle in unbound orbits. Our results extend previous analyses and are fully consistent with recent post-Minkowskian findings.

Twirled Perfect Tensor Networks: Computationally covariant holographic tensor networks

We define a novel class of tensor networks motivated by the Python's Lunch Conjecture (PLC) in local tensor network models of the black hole interior. We start from the observation that, for extended black brane states with short-range correlations, the PLC predicts a complexity that is smaller than the upper bound for generic short-range correlated states. We argue that the PLC makes implicit assumptions about the fine structure of the relevant tensor networks modeling gravity that render them non-generic. We demonstrate this explicitly in random tensor network models of the python's lunch, where the exponential complexity is not generally controlled by the PLC exponent. We trace the difference with the PLC to a lack of "computational covariance" in random tensor networks: while the PLC is motivated by an ability to arbitrarily decompose space into low-complexity units provided certain basic rules are followed, we show that random tensor networks do not generically have this property. We propose another class of tensor networks built from what we call "twirled perfect tensors" that do satisfy the computational covariance property and have a complexity bounded by the PLC value. We still find a discrete limitation from local postselection that appears to be absent in gravity. Moreover, we show that this class of tensor networks combines desirable holographic features of perfect tensor networks and random tensor networks, for example, it obeys a lattice Ryu-Takayanagi formula for arbitrary boundary subregions. Though motivated by holography, these tensor networks provide a flexible framework with potential applications beyond quantum gravity.

A discrete series gauge field at the late-time boundary of $dS_4$

We study the free Maxwell field on the planar patch of four-dimensional de Sitter spacetime ($dS_4$). We review its bulk canonical quantization in the Bunch-Davies vacuum, and we give a representation-theoretic viewpoint by studying the transformation properties of single-particle states under infinitesimal dS transformations. By taking the late-time limit, we identify two late-time operators with scaling dimensions $Δ=1$ (leading) and $Δ=2$ (subleading). We introduce CFT-inspired inner products invariant under the dS group ($SO(4,1)$) for states created by late-time operators acting on the Bunch-Davies vacuum. We explain how the unitary discrete series representations of $SO(4,1)$ associated with the photon are furnished by both operators, in contrast with the Maxwell field on $AdS$ where the $Δ=1$ operator corresponds to a non-normalizable mode. We also explain how the corresponding discrete series representations of $SO(4,1)$ split into a direct sum of representations corresponding to two helicities $+1$ and $-1$. This is achieved by taking advantage of the dS invariance of the self-dual and anti-self-dual sectors of the photon field strength. In our outlook, we draw inspiration from a recent proposal for the microscopic description of $dS_4$ higher-spin gravity where conformal gauge fields in 3 dimensions play a central role, and we investigate a possible connection of the $Δ=1$ late-time operator with a conformal spin-1 gauge field in 3 dimensions.
