Two-Particle Correlation Function in a Finite Volume
Abstract
We investigate the two-particle correlation function in a finite volume. First, defining an unphysical complex-energy sheet of the correlation function and identifying unstable states as poles on the sheet, we demonstrate that the expansion of the correlation function, which includes poles of unstable states, holds up to exponentially decreasing corrections with the volume size. Based on this result, we show that the finite-volume correction to the complex energy of the unstable state also decreases exponentially with the volume size, namely that finite-volume corrections are relatively small for the unstable states. Then, we show that the imaginary-time correlation function in a finite volume approaches that of the infinite volume as $τ/L^2 \rightarrow 0$ while it is dominated by the lowest energy mode as $τ/L^2 \rightarrow \infty$, where $τ$ is the imaginary time, $L$ is the volume size. In drawing these conclusions, we first present a qualitative, general discussion and then demonstrate quantitative results using simple nonrelativistic models with a contact interaction (EFT) and a separable potential.
