Generalization of the Rosenbluth-Putvinski avalanche growth rate to the drift kinetic regime

Abstract

A new collisionless detrapping mechanism is shown to modify the rate of runaway electron (RE) generation by as much as a factor of two for strong inductive electric fields. This detrapping mechanism results from the magnetic well inherent to tokamak geometry being tilted by the strong inductive electric fields present during tokamak disruptions. The impact of this collisionless detrapping mechanism is found to be described by a single dimensionless parameter, whose identification enables the transition between distinct regimes of RE generation to be characterized. Using this composite parameter, it is shown that modifications to the avalanche growth rate by tokamak geometry across a broad range of plasma parameters collapse onto a one-dimensional curve that can be accurately fit with a two parameter function. The resulting analytical formula extends the classic Rosenbluth-Putvinski avalanche growth rate expression beyond the bounce-averaged limit into RE regimes where collisionless detrapping strongly modifies RE generation rates.

Experimental verification of the PRIORA Monte Carlo code for proton radiography

PRIORA (Proton Radiography Ion-Optical Ray-tracing Analysis) is a fast Monte Carlo model for high-energy proton radiography. It combines fitted proton-matter interaction tables with energy-dependent transfer maps of arbitrary order and simulates approximately $10^6$ protons/s through a complete ion-optical system on an 8-core laptop. We verify it with GSI data obtained with the Ta_bench target: fifteen precision slits in a 2 mm Ta plate between symmetric PMMA staircases. A single experimental image provides the image scale, spatial resolution as a function of chromatic load, the direction of longitudinal defocus in both transverse planes, effective angular acceptance and multiple-scattering contrast. With identical processing of experiment and simulation and no physics adjustment, PRIORA reproduces the data obtained with 2 and 4 GeV protons. At 2 GeV, PRIORA also recovers sub-percent quadrupole trims consistent with the control-system records and determines a target-plane spatial resolution of $115\pm6\,μ$m.

Self-organized hybrid scenario mediated by fishbone modes in the EAST tokamak

Self-organized hybrid scenario mediated by fishbone modes in the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) is reported in this work. In this regime, internal transport barriers(ITBs) and a flat core safety factor profile were maintained simultaneously by fishbone modes. First, the drive of low-frequency flows by fishbone modes is clarified, which subsequently suppresses turbulence transport. Besides, fishbone-induced poloidally symmetric (m = 0) toroidal current sheets were first reported experimentally, which drive outward current redistribution that mitigates core current peaking. Together, these effects enable hybrid operation with stable ITBs and robust magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stability, revealing a self-organized pathway for sustaining hybrid scenario for fusion reactors.

Control of the bootstrap current in approximately quasi-axisymmetric magnetic fields

Quasi-axisymmetric stellarators are the stellarator analogue of axisymmetric tokamaks, retaining many of their favorable confinement properties, their compactness and their relative coil simplicity, while avoiding their principal limitation, the need for an inductively driven plasma current. Despite these attractive physics properties, the development of quasi-axisymmetric configurations has been severely constrained by the absence of an experimentally validated divertor concept compatible with their large bootstrap current. In this Letter, approximately quasi-axisymmetric fields, complemented with piecewise omnigenous perturbations, are proposed as the basis for a new strategy towards a stellarator reactor that potentially achieves, simultaneously, simple coil geometries, tokamak-like confinement and, through tailoring of the bootstrap current, compatibility with an island divertor. Implications for attaining a high bootstrap current fraction in tokamak devices are also discussed.
