Derived products and completion defects of inverse limits

Abstract

We compute derived products and inverse limits in Grothendieck categories by exact coresolutions. For the product of $r$ doubled affine lines over $B[s]$, where $B$ is any nonzero commutative ring, the exact dimensions of products, epimorphic countable limits, and arbitrary countable limits are $r$, $r$, and $r+1$. We identify the top derived functors for every $B$-module of coefficients. Both obstruction modules contain the countable reduced product as a natural $B$-module direct summand, and a formal-series map relates them by an explicit cokernel sequence. A relative cofree coresolution gives degree shifts over an arbitrary Grothendieck category and computes the localization defect for arbitrary locally nilpotent diagrams. We also construct transfinite scalar extensions preserving a prescribed kernel and its derived limit;these give nonzero completion defects beyond any fixed ordinal. The general epimorphic top-degree vanishing question is not settled by these constructions.

The algebraic K-theory of $k[\operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb{F}_q)]$

We compute via trace methods the higher algebraic $K$-theory of the group ring $k[\operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb{F}_q)]$, as well as the related groups $\operatorname{PSL}_2(\mathbb{F}_q)$, $\operatorname{PGL}_2(\mathbb{F}_q)$, and $\operatorname{GL}_2(\mathbb{F}_q)$, where $k$ is a finite field of characteristic $p$ and $q=p^r$. At the core of the computation is the algebraic $K$-theory of the group ring of the Sylow $p$-subgroup, $k[C_p^r]$, which we determine via a theorem of Lück--Reich--Rognes--Varisco on cyclic assembly for topological cyclic homology. In the process, we reprove the cyclic assembly result in the language of Nikolaus--Scholze, analyse assembly for smaller families of subgroups, and develop further tools for computing topological cyclic homology of group rings.

Higher Spherical Scissors Congruence II: Comodules

We define the higher Dehn invariant on the Euclidean, hyperbolic, and spherical variants of scissors congruence $K$-theory, and prove that it makes these spectra into comodules over the spectral Sah algebra. This allows us to make the first formulation of the conjecture that the higher volume and Dehn invariants are jointly injective.

Quantitative $K$-homology of uniform Roe algebras

We introduce quantitative $K$-homology for uniform Roe algebras of discrete proper metric spaces with bounded geometry, based on the controlled $KK$-theory of Willett and Yu. We construct a comparison map from Lipschitz $K$-theory and prove that, for chain geodesic spaces, it is an isomorphism in a quantitative sense; in particular, quantitative $K$-homology is isomorphic to the inverse limit of the Lipschitz $K$-theory groups as the Lipschitz constant tends to zero. We also establish a pairing between quantitative $K$-homology and quantitative $K$-theory.
