Optimization of the second Robin eigenvalue on a planar exterior domain under fixed area constraint

Abstract

We consider the Robin Laplacian on a planar exterior domain with a negative boundary parameter. For a negative boundary parameter of a sufficiently large absolute value this operator has at least two negative eigenvalues below the bottom of the essential spectrum. We prove that under a fixed area constraint and convexity assumption on the bounded complement of the exterior domain the second Robin eigenvalue is maximized by the exterior of the disk. The inequality is strict for every exterior of a non-circular domain whenever the comparison disk has a negative second eigenvalue. The proof modifies the parallel-coordinate method by allowing the angular phase of a trial function to vary with the distance from the boundary. This result resolves the first item in a 2024 conjecture by the authors under an additional convexity assumption. Relaxing the convexity and the perimeter constraint remain open problems.

Silent Orbits and Cancellations in the Wave Trace

This paper shows that the wave trace of a bounded and strictly convex planar domain may be arbitrarily smooth in a neighborhood of some point in the length spectrum. In other words, the Poisson relation, which asserts that the singular support of the wave trace is contained in the closure of $\pm$ the length spectrum, can almost be made into a strict inclusion. To do so, we construct large families of domains for which there exist multiple periodic billiard orbits having the same length but different Maslov indices. Using the microlocal Balian-Bloch-Zelditch parametrix for wave invariants developed in our previous paper, we solve a large system of equations for the boundary curvature jets, which leads to the required cancellations. We call such periodic orbits silent, since they are undetectable from the ostensibly audible wave trace. Such cancellations show that there are potential limitations in using the wave trace for inverse spectral problems and, more fundamentally, that the Laplace spectrum and the length spectrum are inherently different mathematical objects, at least insofar as the wave trace is concerned.

Optimal Riesz mean inequalities for the Coulomb Hamiltonian

We are interested in whether the Riesz means of the eigenvalues of the Coulomb Hamiltonian can be bounded by the corresponding semiclassical phase space integral. In dimensions two and three we determine the optimal Riesz exponent above which this bound holds.

Scattering for the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map and the Steklov spectrum

We develop scattering theory for Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DtN) maps on asymptotically conic, unbounded domains $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^d$, that are only Lipschitz inside a compact set and whose boundary extends to infinity. Specifically, we prove a limiting absorption principle and demonstrate existence of the scattering matrix. As an application of the theory, we show that the eigenvalues of Steklov-type problems on curvilinear polygons, $\mathcal{P}$, are well approximated by the eigenvalues of a Dirac operator on $\partial\mathcal{P}$ whose transmission coefficients between edges meeting at a corner are given by the scattering matrix for DtN maps on asymptotically conic domains associated to the corners. Up to an arbitrary loss in the power of the eigenvalue, the error in the approximation is optimal among all possible asymptotics that use only local information about $\partial\mathcal{P}$.
