Theory of the $1/9$ Magnetization Plateau of the Spin-$1/2$ Kagome Heisenberg Antiferromagnet

Abstract

We investigate the $1/9$ magnetization plateau of the spin-$1/2$ kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet using infinite projected entangled-pair states and identify a spin-density-wave state with a $27$-site unit cell and a lower variational energy than previous approaches. In contrast to higher-magnetization plateaus, which are well described by localized magnons on nonoverlapping hexagons and preserve a sixfold rotational symmetry, the $1/9$ plateau only keeps a threefold rotational symmmetry and consists of a tiling by three types of $9$-site clusters related by $\pm2π/3$ rotations. These conclusions are supported by a complementary cluster mean-field theory which correctly preserves the symmetry of the higher plateaus but leads to the same spontaneous symmetry breaking for the $1/9$ plateau with a qualitatively similar pattern of nine different local magnetizations.

Magnetic Field Control of the Néel Vector and Magnon Visibility in Altermagnetic MnTe

Altermagnetic order gives rise to momentum-dependent spin splitting of electronic and magnonic excitations even in the absence of a net magnetization. Here, we investigate the magnetic field dependence of the spin-wave spectrum of altermagnetic $α$-MnTe using inelastic neutron scattering and linear spin-wave theory. An in-plane magnetic field continuously reorients the Néel vector by overcoming the weak crystalline anisotropy, while remaining small compared with the dominant exchange scale. We find that this reorientation leaves the magnon energies and line widths essentially unchanged, but strongly modifies the measured spectral intensity through the transverse-momentum projection. Our results demonstrate a clear separation between the soft orientational degree of freedom of the antiferromagnetic order and the robust exchange-dominated chiral magnon spectrum. This combination establishes $α$-MnTe as a platform for reconfigurable magnon coupling, in which external fields tune how excitations interact with polarized probes without substantially altering their frequency or coherence.

Thermal Hall Signatures of Distinct Schwinger-Boson Flux Sectors on the Honeycomb Lattice

Thermal transport offers a bulk probe of charge-neutral excitations in frustrated magnets. It remains challenging, however, to determine whether such transport can distinguish different parton mean-field structures of the same spin system. This question is particularly relevant on the honeycomb lattice, where distinct $0$-flux, $π$-flux, and chiral $π/2$-flux sectors have been proposed. In this paper, we compare self-consistent saddle-point solutions in these three sectors for a frustrated $J_1-J_2$ Heisenberg model with a next-nearest-neighbor Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and a perpendicular magnetic field. Using finite-temperature Schwinger-boson mean-field theory and the Kubo formula for bosonic Bogoliubov-de Gennes systems, we evaluate the intrinsic spinon thermal Hall conductivity. At a common parameter point where all three branches remain gapped, the $0$-flux response is positive and the $π$-flux response is negative for $D>0$ and $h>0$ under the sign conventions used in this paper, whereas the $π/2$-flux response changes sign with increasing temperature. We further show that a projective symmetry combining a sixfold rotation with time reversal forces the zero-field response of a fixed chiral $π/2$-flux domain to vanish. Within the mean-field regime examined in this paper, the sign and temperature dependence of $κ_{xy}/T$ therefore provide a flux-sensitive transport signature.

Measurement-induced entanglement phases in hyperbolic gauge-Higgs models

Gauge-Higgs theory in flat spacetime provides a prime theoretical model of multiple phases of matter with distinct entanglement structures. More recently, there has been interest in hyperbolic space and the influence its extensive boundaries have on these structures. Entanglement transitions between non-equilibrium phases, such as topological phases, can be realized by the competition of non-commutating measurements. Here we study the entanglement phases of gauge-Higgs models on hyperbolic lattices described by measurement-only dynamics. We chart 2D phase diagrams by employing topological entanglement entropy and introducing a generalized measurement-induced entanglement tailored for hyperbolic Higgs phases. Utilizing duality, we find a phase absent in Euclidean space, wherein the bulk lattice hosts separated clusters of symmetry-protected topological order. Transitions between this "archipelago" phase and neighboring topological and trivial phases feature a critical exponent $δ$ belonging to a mean-field universality class. Our essential tool is a 3D resource state inspired by measurement-based quantum computation that simulates the spacetime evolution of the 2D quantum state with a third direction of entanglement. This allows us to analyze spacetime "sponges" of entanglement, which map to classical percolation theory and allow us to infer values of critical points on our phase diagrams' boundaries.
