On memory effects in odd spacetime dimensions

Abstract

We establish the existence of a new electromagnetic memory effect in all odd spacetime dimensions. This effect is a universal property of electromagnetic fields sourced by charged particles of constant momenta, appears at the Coulombic order and is directly related to the Weinberg soft theorem. We provide a unified derivation of this effect in all higher dimensions by evaluating the Maxwell constraint on a null plane at large, finite distance. We observe that in odd spacetime dimensions, the lightray integral computing the memory effect does not commute with the large-$r$ expansion. Our results necessarily assume that the lightray integral is taken prior to the $r \rightarrow \infty$ limit. The effect vanishes in the opposite order of limits, in agreement with previous results. We compute the Coulombic order electromagnetic memory effect for both massless and massive sources in all higher dimensions, explain its relation to the Fourier transform of the leading soft photon theorem and present a protocol for its measurement in a finite time parametrically larger than the distance of a detector from the sources. We conclude with comments on the generalization to gravity.

Beyond Discontinuities: Cosmological WFCs and the Supersymmetric Orthogonal Grassmannian

We construct an $\mathcal N=2$ supersymmetric Grassmannian representation of tree-level wavefunction coefficients (WFCs) by combining Grassmannian representations of energy discontinuities with an inversion formula. Since the orthogonal Grassmannian captures homogeneous solutions of the spinor conformal Ward identities, while current WFCs satisfy inhomogeneous Ward identities, the full WFC is obtained by reconstructing the energy-dependent prefactors from a basis of discontinuities. We first demonstrate this mechanism at three points, where the triple discontinuity determines the transverse current WFC and admits a supersymmetric uplift. At four points, we invert a spanning set of five current discontinuities and embed the result in momentum superspace using super-orthogonal-Grassmannian invariants generated by $\hatδ(CΩΞ^I)$. This yields the full four-point super WFC in Grassmannian form. We show that the two orthogonal-Grassmannian branches organize distinct supersymmetric invariants and reduce, in the flat-space limit, to different helicity superamplitudes.

Advances in kappa deformed electrodynamics

The so called $κ$-Minkowski spacetime is a prominent candidate for a quantum gravity space, and its properties have been the subject of investigation over the last thirty years. In this work, we propose classical electrodynamics equations that satisfy the dispersion relation derived from the bicrossproduct approach to the $κ$-Poincaré algebra. We explore the conservation laws, a new gauge symmetry, and the solutions for the scalar and vector potentials under the influence of the deformed parameter. The characteristics of the vacuum as a material medium are shown in terms of the refractive index and the group and phase velocities. The Green's functions associated with the wave operator in the bicrossproduct basis are calculated in both the retarded and advanced prescriptions. Finally, we discuss how the deformation scale affects the causality of the theory.

Fortuity beyond counting: an explicit construction

We reconsider the "fortuity'' mechanism in the D1D5 CFT focusing on the K3 symmetric orbifold. Going beyond the counting of BPS states, we investigate perturbatively how the explicit form of the BPS cohomologies is modified by the twist-two deformations. We calculate the action of the supercharges in the sector $(h,j)=(1,0)$ for different values of the central charge and derive explicit expressions for the primary states. Equipped with this information, we compare some protected three-point couplings in the free and the gravity regime. We show that agreement between the two descriptions imposes non-trivial constraints on the identification of monotone and fortuitous states. In particular, we argue that the map relating theories with different values of the central charge must and can be defined so as to commute with the supercharges that define the cochain complex. We then study the three-point correlators between the fortuitous and monotone states identified in our analysis to assess whether the two sectors are dynamically decoupled. We find an explicit example of a non-vanishing coupling between two monotone and a fortuitous state, providing evidence that the two sectors are dynamically connected.
