Revisiting the Schwarz Lemma for the Pentablock: Counterexamples and Sharp Interpolation Criteria

Abstract

Alshehri and Lykova (\emph{J. Geom. Anal.} \textbf{33} (2023)) formulated a Schwarz lemma for the pentablock $P$, giving a criterion for the existence of an analytic map from the unit disc $\mathbb D$ into the closed pentablock $\overline P$ that sends the origin to the origin and a prescribed point $λ_0\in\mathbb D$ to a given point $x_0\in\overline P$. We show that the sufficiency direction of their criterion is false. We identify the underlying error as the extension to the open unit disc of a Fejér--Riesz identity that is valid only on the unit circle. We establish a corrected necessary and sufficient interpolation criterion when the last two components are prescribed by a fixed rational $Γ$-inner function and resolve the special case $s_0=0$. Using the Poisson integral representation of the associated outer spectral factor, we obtain a sharp comparison between the corrected bound and the bound proposed by Alshehri and Lykova, with a precise characterization of equality. We further express the logarithmic difference between these bounds as a nonnegative Green potential, thereby quantifying the discrepancy in terms of the derivative of the first coordinate of the prescribed $Γ$-inner function. Finally, we formulate a variational problem over rational $Γ$-inner interpolants satisfying the prescribed two-point conditions. We show that the supremum of the associated outer-factor quantities determines the maximal admissible modulus of the first coordinate among pentablock-valued interpolants whose last two components belong to this class. Equivalently, this extremal problem reduces to minimizing the corresponding Green potential. We conclude by discussing the remaining problem of characterizing unrestricted Schwarz interpolation for the pentablock and its connection with the Lempert function.

Morse theory methods for a class of quasi-linear elliptic systems of higher order

We develop the local Morse theory for a class of non-twice continuously differentiable functionals on Hilbert spaces, including a new generalization of the Gromoll-Meyer's splitting theorem and a weaker Marino-Prodi perturbation type result. They are applicable to a wide range of multiple integrals with quasi-linear elliptic Euler equations and systems of higher order.

Group-Frames for Banach Spaces

In the literature, frames generated by unitary representations of groups (known as group-frames) have been studied only for Hilbert spaces. We conduct the first study of frames for Banach spaces generated by isometrically invertible representations of discrete groups on Banach spaces. These frames are characterized using left-regular and right-regular representations, Gram matrices, and group matrices on classical sequence spaces. A sufficiently large collection of functional-vector pairs using the double commutant of the representation is identified to generate group-frames for Banach spaces. Subsequently, we study Schauder frames generated by time-frequency shift operators on finite-dimensional Banach spaces. We derive the Moyal formula, the fundamental identity of Gabor analysis, the Wexler-Raz criterion, and the Ron-Shen duality in functional form.

A Complex Geometric Approach to the Discrete Gabor Transform and Localization Operators on the Flat Torus

In a recent paper, the discrete Gabor transform was connected to a Gabor transform with a time frequency domain given by the flat torus. We show that the corresponding Bargmann-Fock spaces can be expressed as theta functions (or equivalently line bundles on Abelian varieties). We give applications of this viewpoint to frame results for the discrete Gabor transform. In particular, we get necessary conditions which hold in higher dimensions and can expand the known results in the one dimensional case, the primary tool being the theorem of the square. We also give an application to asymptotics of restriction operators which arises via the asymptotic behavior of Bergman kernels and Toeplitz operators for high tensor powers of line bundles and find that discrete time frequency restriction operators will exhibit "plunge" behaviors similar to those of time frequency restriction operators in other contexts.
