Simplifying 2-Bundle Descriptions of Invariants and Local Dynamics

Abstract

A string couples to a two-form gauge potential whose local descriptions need not fit together as a single global form. Principal 2-bundles provide a geometric description of this gluing. However, we recover surface amplitudes and quantum partition functions, as well as local classical field dynamics, without the 2-bundle formalism. For global phases, topological and index invariants, and twisted-sheaf moduli, established equivalences give alternative descriptions through cocycles, bundles, operators, or modules, with the required global compatibility data. For three-dimensional finite gauge theories with cohomological actions, Fourier transformation expresses the partition function as a sum of partition functions of ordinary finite-group gauge theories. An invertible local substitution reduces invariant classical actions for a class of 2-bundle connections represented by finite-dimensional crossed modules to ordinary gauge and tensor dynamics. These finite and local reductions explicitly eliminate field variables. A four-dimensional quadratic example instead admits a direct cochain evaluation even when an ordinary gauge-theory reduction fails. These results therefore do not require the additional 2-bundle presentation.

Existence of a third self-similar solution of the Yang--Mills equation in high odd dimensions

In a recent paper~\cite{BGW}, Bizoń, Glogić, and Wasserman (BGW) reduced the classification of smooth self-similar Yang--Mills profiles in odd spatial dimensions $d\ge11$ to an algebraic problem of counting roots of an explicit polynomial in a prescribed interval. Two roots correspond to explicit profiles. BGW conjectured that there is exactly one additional root and verified this in a range of odd dimensions. Here, we prove the existence of an additional root, and hence of a third smooth self-similar profile, in every odd dimension $d\geq11$. The proof combines an endpoint sign calculation for the resonance polynomial with an algebraic argument showing that the third root is distinct from the two explicit ones. Uniqueness remains open in general.

Pointwise decay of cumulants and scaling regimes of chaotic states

We consider nonequilibrium chaotic states of classical interacting particles in a family of scaling limits motivated by kinetic theory. The particle activity and the strength of the pair interaction are rescaled simultaneously, allowing for both dilute and non-dilute regimes. Using cluster expansion, we derive pointwise bounds for truncated correlation functions (cumulants) of arbitrary order. We cover stable finite-range interactions and repulsive Riesz potentials, including non-integrable tails in bounded macroscopic domains.

Ground State Energy of Dilute Fermi Gases in 1D

We study the one-dimensional spin-$J$ Fermi gas, interacting through a general repulsive 2-body potential, and prove asymptotics of the ground state energy in the dilute limit. The asymptotic behaviour is given in terms of the ground state energy of a spin chain, which is the Heisenberg antiferromagnet in the case of spin-1/2 fermions. We determine similar asymptotics for the Lieb-Liniger-Heisenberg model, showing that a product trial state used by Girardeau is not optimal.
