Hidden Singularity and Fractal Dimensions for Extended Harper Operators

Abstract

We prove that, for every irrational frequency, the spectra of the extended Harper family throughout the zero-measure regime have finite $1/2$-dimensional Hausdorff measure and lower box dimension at most $1/2$. Both numbers improve to $1/3$ on the isotropic critical boundary. The proof is based on a family of unitary transformations, that specializes to the chiral transform of [BJK] for the case of the critical almost Mathieu. This family allows to make every operator in this regime spectrally equivalent to a singular Jacobi operator. Using these singular representatives, we apply the method of [BJK] to construct covers by $O(q_n)$ intervals of total length $O(q_n^{-1})$, improving to $O(q_n^{-2})$ on the isotropic boundary, where $q_n$ is the denominator of a canonical approximant to $α$. The covers give upper box bounds and, with packing estimates, examples where the box-counting dimension fails to exist.

Derivation of the 3D quintic Gross--Pitaevskii equation

We study the time evolution of Bose--Einstein condensates with three-body interactions in the Gross--Pitaevskii regime. We show that Bose--Einstein condensation is preserved under many-body evolution and that the condensate wavefunction evolves according to the quintic Gross--Pitaevskii equation in $\mathbb{R}^3$, which is energy critical. In particular, we show that the effective coupling constant is universal and depends only on a three-body scattering hypervolume.

Where solitons are in a KdV soliton gas

The Korteweg-De Vries (KdV) equation is a paradigmatic model of integrable classical fields, with solitonic solutions where localised profiles interact by elastic, factorised scattering. When solitons interact, their shapes are modified, and individual solitons cannot be identified. This is a key problem in soliton gas where one needs a density of solitons per unit distance: can we locate asymptotic objects, quasiparticles, even at finite times in the macroscopic limit? Quasiparticles' positions should satisfy locality properties, the field in mesoscopic regions being determined by quasiparticles lying there. We solve this problem for the KdV equation. We define solitons' positions as functions of spectral and impact parameters via an expansion bijection generalising that of hard rods. These ``KdV rods'' solve the semiclassical Bethe equations, implementing the collision rate ansatz, and satisfy a repulsion condition generalising the rods' lengths to the KdV scattering shifts and related to the condensate condition. This gives an explicit characterisation of multi-soliton fields in terms of solitons' positions instead of impact parameters. We construct fluid-cell projections, that project out solitons lying outside mesoscopic regions: the resulting field is unchanged in this region and supported there up to small corrections. We show that in the weak limit, conserved densities are given by the empirical density for these solitons' positions. Thus we have associated a kinetic theory of quasiparticles to the KdV equation. The results hold under natural assumptions on spectral and impact parameters, and no randomness is required. Our proof is based on novel solitonic tau functions. This is a crucial step towards rigorously deriving the kinetic equation of the KdV soliton gas, first proposed by Gennady El in 2003. We believe the methods are generalisable to other solitonic models.

An elliptic generalization of the $D^{(2)}_{2}$ Spin chain

An integrable elliptic generalization of the closed $D^{(2)}_2$ quantum spin chain is constructed. Taking the trigonometric limit, we have shown that the corresponding R-matrix reduces to that of the $D^{(2)}_2$ one, up to a similarity transformation. Basing on the very fact of the factorization for the R-matrix and the corresponding transfer matrix which indeed ensures the integrability of the model, we give the exact solution of the model which can be expressed in terms of a homogeneous T-Q relation.
