The heterotic superpotential and the alpha' expansion

Abstract

We study the role of the Hull connection in the heterotic superpotential for N=1 d=4 vacua. The integrand is defined in terms of H, which is in turn defined in terms of a gravitational Chern--Simons coupling involving H. We show this recursive structure is key to W reproducing some of the ten--dimensional supersymmetry conditions written down by Bergshoeff--de Roo through α'^3. With this evidence in hand we make some observations about extending some of the tensor equations of Hull and Strominger to all orders in α'.

Advances in kappa deformed electrodynamics

The so called $κ$-Minkowski spacetime is a prominent candidate for a quantum gravity space, and its properties have been the subject of investigation over the last thirty years. In this work, we propose classical electrodynamics equations that satisfy the dispersion relation derived from the bicrossproduct approach to the $κ$-Poincaré algebra. We explore the conservation laws, a new gauge symmetry, and the solutions for the scalar and vector potentials under the influence of the deformed parameter. The characteristics of the vacuum as a material medium are shown in terms of the refractive index and the group and phase velocities. The Green's functions associated with the wave operator in the bicrossproduct basis are calculated in both the retarded and advanced prescriptions. Finally, we discuss how the deformation scale affects the causality of the theory.

Trace Relations and Partition Functions

In general trace relations appear in finite $N$ matrix models and collective field theories. They lead, as was established previously, to reductions of large $N$ Hilbert spaces. Even more importantly they induce the appearance of a whole class of new (miraculous) states whose number grows exponentially in $N^2$. In this work we discuss their relevance to finite $N$ thermodynamics and the role they play in constraining the partition functions of finite $N$ theories.

Revisiting Connes' Finite Spectral Distance on Non-commutative Spaces: Moyal Plane and Fuzzy Sphere

We revise and extend the algorithm of F. G. Scholtz and B. Chakraborty [J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 46 (2013) 085204] to compute the finite Connes' distance between normal states on the Moyal plane and fuzzy sphere, using the Hilbert-Schmidt operatorial formulation. The original expression gives only a lower bound. The revised expression involves an infimum over the "transverse" component $Δρ_\perp$ of the algebra element in addition to the "longitudinal" component $Δρ$, identified with the difference of density matrices representing the states. Determining the transverse component for which the infimum is reached remains non-trivial, but under rather generic conditions the distance is proportional to the Hilbert-Schmidt norm of $Δρ$. We also determine an upper bound by adapting the approach of P. Martinetti and L. Tomassini [Commun. Math. Phys. 323 (2013) 107-141], and look for an optimal element saturating it. For the Moyal plane, such an element is obtained through the limit of a sequence of finite-dimensional projections of the representative of a multiplier-algebra element onto subspaces spanned by Dirac eigen-spinors. In contrast, on the fuzzy sphere the upper bound, given by the geodesic distance on a commutative sphere, is never reached for any finite $n$-representation of $SU(2)$. For maximal non-commutativity ($n=1/2$), the finite distance coincides with the lower bound and the transverse component plays no role. This changes from $n=1$ onwards, where the revised algorithm improves the estimate and gives an almost exact result. The contrasting features of these spaces become transparent through the analysis in the eigen-spinor bases of their Dirac operators.
