Finite Tensor 2-Categories

Abstract

We propose a definition of a finite linear 2-category, as a 2-categorical analogue of the notion of a finite abelian category of Etingof-Ostrik. We go on to prove that finite linear 2-categories with adjunctible projectives are precisely the Morita 2-categories of (all) algebras in a finite multitensor category. Thus, finite linear 2-categories with adjunctible projectives can be viewed as `non-semisimple' generalizations of the finite semisimple 2-categories of Douglas-Reutter. Secondly, we study finite multitensor 2-categories, that is, finite linear 2-categories equipped with a monoidal structure for which every objects has duals. We extend several results about fusion 2-categories to our present setting. In particular, we investigate the properties of the 2-category of bimodules over a rigid algebra $\mathcal{A}$ in a finite tensor 2-category $\mathfrak{C}$. We show that, if $\mathfrak{C}$ has adjunctible projectives, then the 2-category of $\mathcal{A}$-$\mathcal{A}$-bimodules in $\mathfrak{C}$ is a finite multitensor 2-category. This construction provides many examples of finite tensor 2-categories. For instance, the Drinfeld center of a finite tensor 2-category with adjunctible projectives is a finite tensor 2-category.

Re-framing the classification of ideals in noncommutative tensor triangular geometry

We prove that a 'pseudo-Hochster dual' of the noncommutative Balmer spectrum of a monoidal triangulated category classifies its semiprime thick tensor ideals. This extends Balmer's classification of radical thick tensor ideals to noncommutative tensor triangular geometry. To achieve this, we utilize the notion of support data for lattices and frames, under which the classification follows via Stone duality. We also give a characterization for when the noncommutative Balmer spectrum behaves as it does in tensor triangular geometry, that is, when it is a spectral space with quasi-compact opens given by complements of supports. Finally, we show that rigid centrally generated monoidal triangulated categories satisfy this property, and we answer a question posed by Negron--Pevtsova regarding classification of one-sided tensor ideals via cohomological support.

Some notes on tensor triangular geometry

These are notes from the lectures I gave at the Oberwolfach seminar `Tensor Triangular Geometry and Interactions' which was held in October 2025. The aim of these notes is to give an introduction to tensor triangular geometry, for both small and large categories, through the lens of lattice theory. We do not try to be exhaustive and this is reflected in both the content and the bibliography. For instance we are quite light on triangulated preliminaries, especially for compactly generated categories. The first three sections treat the essentially small case and conclude with a tensor triangular proof of Thomason's theorem computing the spectrum of the perfect complexes on a quasi-compact and quasi-separated scheme. The last section treats the compactly generated case. This final section is somewhat experimental and contains some new thoughts.

Commutation of Smyth and Hoare Power Constructions in Well-filtered Dcpos

Prior work [11] established a commutativity result for the Hoare power construction and a modified version of the Smyth power construction consisting of strongly compact sets, which is defined for Us-admitting dcpos, where Us-admissability is well-filteredness with compact sets replaced by strongly compact sets. In this paper, we consider the Hoare power construction H and the Smyth power construction Q on the category WF of well-filtered dcpos with Scott-continuous maps. Actually, the functors H and Q can be extended to monads. We prove that H and Q commute, that is, HQ(L) is isomorphic to QH(L) for a well-filtered dcpo L, if and only if L satisfies a property similar to consonance that we call (KC) and the Scott topology coincides with the upper Vietoris topology on Q(L). We also investigate the Eilenberg-Moore category of the monad composed by H and Q under a distributive law on WF and characterize it to be a subcategory of the category Frm, which is composed of all frames and all frame homomorphisms.
