Ergodicity, memory loss, and directional stability on von Neumann algebras

Abstract

For a deterministic sequence of normal unital completely positive maps on a von Neumann algebra, convergence of normal states, loss of memory, and convergence of Cesàro averages are different properties. This paper separates these properties in the predual norm and identifies the precise role of composition order. Uniform loss of memory for right-appended products on the predual implies uniform convergence to a normal state without any compactness or trace assumption; the convergence rate is bounded by the image diameter. In contrast, on every infinite-dimensional $σ$-finite von Neumann algebra there are right-appended products with pointwise loss of memory but no convergent normal-state trajectory, even though all nontrivial state images equal a fixed compact line segment. Consequently, finite dimensionality is characterized by the universal implication from pointwise backward memory loss to mixing. An attained normal-functional minorization coefficient extends the common-lower-bound construction for matrix channels to arbitrary von Neumann algebras and yields quantitative contraction and unique normal entrance laws. Further results distinguish pointwise from uniform relaxation, Cesàro convergence from mixing, fixed-start from time-uniform contraction, and stationary from moving asymptotic states. As an application, inhomogeneous transfer states on spin chains, including matrix product states, are shown to have a unique thermodynamic limit, uniformly in the boundary condition, with an arbitrary von Neumann algebra as bond algebra; boundary dependence and correlations are controlled by the same product coefficients. All counterexamples are explicit and extend to algebras of types I, II, and III.

On the embedding rigidity problem for uniformly locally finite coarse spaces

In this paper, we construct countable uniformly locally finite metric spaces $X$ and $Y$ such that $C_u^*(X)$ is isomorphic to a hereditary $C^*$-subalgebra of $C_u^*(Y)$, but neither space coarsely embeds into the other. This gives a negative answer to the embedding rigidity problem for uniformly locally finite coarse spaces. On the positive side, we prove that a hereditary embedding $C_u^*(X)\to C_u^*(Y)$ implies an injective coarse embedding $X\to Y$ whenever $C_u^*(Y)$ contains no block-rank-one ghost projection. In particular, this strengthens the coarse embedding theorem of Braga, Farah, and Vignati by obtaining injectivity under the same hypothesis that every sparse subspace of $Y$ yields only compact ghost projections.

Extensions of Operator Systems, Hyperrigidity and Quantum Double Suspension

We introduce a class of extensions of unital operator systems satisfying a certain Toeplitz type property and show that these extensions induce corresponding extensions of the $C^*$-algebras they generate. We prove that an extension in this class is hyperrigid in the $C^*$-algebra it generates if and only if both operator systems from which it is constructed are hyperrigid in the $C^*$-algebras they generate. We then introduce the quantum double suspension of operator systems as a special case of this construction and show that its iterates yield the Hong-Szymański quantum double suspensions at the $C^*$-algebra level, including the Vaksman-Soibelman quantum spheres. In particular, we construct hyperrigid operator systems that generate the $C^*$-algebras of these quantum spheres. As a further application, we show that every counterexample to Arveson's hyperrigidity conjecture gives rise to a sequence of counterexamples. We identify the Šilov ideal and the $C^*$-envelope of these extensions and derive a $K$-theoretic condition under which each such sequence contains infinitely many pairwise non-isomorphic counterexamples. In particular, Scherer's counterexample gives rise to infinitely many pairwise non-isomorphic counterexamples. Finally, we compute the propagation number, an invariant of operator systems introduced by Connes and van Suijlekom, for this class of extensions.

Classification of reduced free products of nuclear C*-algebras

Consider the countably infinite reduced free product $D$ of copies of $(\mathrm C([0,1]),λ)$, where $λ$ is Lebesgue measure. It is proved that finite and countable reduced free products of unital separable nuclear UCT $\mathrm C^*$-algebras with respect to a chosen family of faithful traces are classified, after adjoining $D$, by the Elliott invariant. In other words, an isomorphism between the naive K-theory invariants of two such algebras is induced by an isomorphism between the algebras.
