On a problem of A. N. Skiba and L. A. Shemetkov concerning $S_n$-closed subformations of a one-generated formation

Abstract

Throughout this paper, all groups are finite. Let $\mathrm{form}(G)$ denote the formation generated by a group $G$. A formation $\mathfrak{F}$ is said to be $S_n$-closed if every subnormal subgroup of every group in $\mathfrak{F}$ belongs to $\mathfrak{F}$. A. N. Skiba and L. A. Shemetkov posed the problem of proving that $\mathrm{form}(G)$ has only finitely many $S_n$-closed subformations for every group $G$ (Problem 14.81 of the Kourovka Notebook). In this paper we propose a negative answer to this problem. We prove that for the group $G_0=(\mathrm{SL}_2(5)\rtimes C_2)\times\mathrm{SL}_2(5)$ of order 28800, where $C_2$ acts on $\mathrm{SL}_2(5)$ by an outer automorphism, the formation $\mathrm{form}(G_0)$ has an infinite strictly descending chain of $S_n$-closed subformations. The main tool is a family of central-valued multilinear maps, defined for every group in $\mathrm{form}(G_0)$ by its outer actions on its components; their vanishing is preserved under taking epimorphic images, subdirect products and subnormal subgroups. The members of the chain are separated by central quotients of the groups $\mathrm{SL}_2(5)^{2^d-1}\rtimes C_2^d$, $d\geq 2$. Using Burichenko's description of the lattice of subformations of $\mathrm{form}(\mathrm{SL}_2(5)\rtimes C_2)$, we also prove that every non-empty $S_n$-closed subformation of $\mathrm{form}(G_0)$ is generated, as an ordinary formation, by a single group, and that the set of such subformations is countably infinite. Finally, we determine the intersection of the chain and give an explicit generator of it.

The double coset problem for parabolic subgroups of braid groups

We solve the double coset problem for arbitrary parabolic subgroups of the $n$-strand braid group $B_n$, by reducing it to the simultaneous conjugacy problem in the larger group $B_{n+1}$. The resulting decision algorithm is uniform in the braid index and the supplied subgroup generators. We also formulate the reduction for general group embeddings, and apply it to additional commuting constraints, several other spherical Artin types, and finite direct products.

Matrix Waring Problem-III

Let $n,k$ be positive integers and $q$ be a prime power. We prove that there exists a real constant $C_k$ depending only on $k$ such that if $ \# M_n(\mathbb{F}_q) > C_k$ then every element in $M_n(\mathbb{F}_q)$ is a sum of two $k$th powers, proving Larsen's conjecture.

Failure of the congruence Hasse principle for commutators in orientable surface groups

Ghosh, Meiri and Sarnak showed that the commutator equation over $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$ satisfies a profinite local to global principle, and that for a prime $\ell\equiv\pm1$ mod $5$ it fails for $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z}[1/\ell])$ with a reciprocity obstruction. We extend the failure to surface groups. For the genus-$2$ surface group $Γ_2$ we construct an explicit representation $ρ:Γ_2\to\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathcal{O}_{K,S})$, where $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{5})$ and $\mathcal{O}_{K,S}=\mathbb{Z}[\frac{1+\sqrt{5}}{2},\frac{1}{10}]$, whose quotients modulo the maximal ideals are the full groups $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{F}_q)$ except in residue characteristic $3$, where the quotient has order $24$. For every $k\ge2$ the word $[a_1,b_1]^k$ is not a commutator in $Γ_2$, while its image is a commutator in every one of these quotients. The same holds for every surface group $Γ_g$ with $g\ge2$.
