Color-Reconnection Effects on the nMPI-Nch Conditional Multiplicity Fluctuations in PYTHIA 8 pp Collisions

Abstract

We examine conditional charged-multiplicity fluctuations at fixed multiparton interaction (MPI) count in retained PYTHIA proton-proton samples at centre-of-mass energies of 2.76, 7, and 13 TeV. Charged particles satisfy |eta| < 0.8 and 0.15 < pT < 20 GeV/c. In the historical colour-reconnection (CR)-labelled baseline samples, the CR-ON conditional mean is smaller by a larger fraction than the standard deviation: the absolute width is smaller, while the coefficient of variation is larger in every retained matched MPI bin. Effective lifetime/decay settings and their per-run correspondence are unverified for this baseline, so these comparisons do not establish that CR alone causes the observed differences or their energy dependence. A separately documented 13 TeV comparison using the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) CP5 tune, with equal non-CR physics settings and particle data across the ON/OFF pair, exhibits the same absolute-versus-relative width ordering. Retained independent Monash and A14 samples also show this pattern, subject to historical production-record limitations. A comparison with mean-transverse-momentum data from A Large Ion Collider Experiment (ALICE) and simulated activity estimators provides final-state context within the stated particle-definition and provenance limits.

Unusual portals to new exotics, the $W$-gluon portal

We explore models where new light exotic (LEX) states interact with the Standard Model (SM) through the $W$-gluon portal, an asymmetric di-boson portal. The complete set of effective operators up to dimension six which couple a single LEX state to at least one $W$ boson and one gluon is considered. Other Standard Model particles may also be present in the interactions. We show that the $W$-gluon portal allows us to access a large array of exotic states in non-trivial representations of SU(3)$_\text{c}$ and SU(2)$_\text{L}$. New single production collider modes and phenomenological signatures for these light exotic states at the LHC and $ep$ colliders are discussed.

Unification of Gravity and Standard Model: Weyl-Dirac-Born-Infeld action

We construct a unified (quantum) description, by the gauge principle, of gravity and Standard Model (SM), that generalises the Dirac-Born-Infeld action to the SM and Weyl geometry, hereafter called Weyl-Dirac-Born-Infeld action (WDBI). The theory is formulated in $d =4-2ε$ dimensions. The WDBI action is a general gauge theory of SM and Weyl group (of dilatations and Poincaré symmetry), in the Weyl gauge covariant (metric!) formulation of Weyl geometry. The theory is SM and Weyl gauge invariant in $d=4-2ε$ dimensions and there is no Weyl anomaly. The WDBI action has the unique elegant feature, not present in other gauge theories or even in string theory, that it is mathematically well-defined in $d=4-2ε$ dimensions with no need to introduce in the action a UV regulator scale or field. This action actually {\it predicts} that gravity, through (Weyl covariant) space-time curvature $\hat R$, acts as UV regulator of both SM and gravity in $d=4$. A series expansion of the WDBI action (in dimensionless couplings) recovers in the leading order a Weyl gauge invariant version of SM and the Weyl (gauge theory of) quadratic gravity. The SM and Einstein-Hilbert gravity are recovered in the Stueckelberg broken phase of Weyl gauge symmetry, which restores Riemannian geometry below Planck scale. Sub-leading orders are suppressed by powers of (dimensionless) gravitational coupling ($ξ$) of Weyl quadratic gravity.
