On Khovanov local equivalence groups

Abstract

Inspired by work in Seiberg--Witten and Heegaard Floer homology, Dunfield, Schütz, and the author constructed an abelian "local equivalence group" built from pairs of chain complexes, and a homomorphism from the smooth concordance group to this group that uses the odd Khovanov complex and the Bar-Natan deformation of the even Khovanov complex. Lewark independently gave a related local equivalence group and concordance invariant, using only the Bar-Natan deformation. In this paper, we construct $(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})^\infty$ subgroups of Lewark's local equivalence group and the kernel of the map from our local equivalence group to Lewark's, as well as $\mathbb{Z}^\infty$ direct summands of Lewark's group and this kernel, invisible to the $s$-invariants. The construction gives at least six $\mathbb{Z}$-valued concordance homomorphisms linearly independent from $s$, $τ$, and Dai--Hom--Stoffregen--Truong's invariants.

Quasi-ribbon but non-ribbon surface-link of trivial components

An operation on a surface-link preserving the surface-knot components called a quasi-equivalence is introduced, which induces an equivalence relation on the surface-links. A quasi-ribbon surface-link is a surface-link quasi-equivalent to a ribbon surface-link. It is shown that a surface-link of trivial components is a quasi-ribbon surface link if it has only at most one non-spherical component, whereas there exist examples that are not quasi-ribbon surface-links of trivial components when it has at least two aspherical components. For every closed disconnected, orientable surface, a quasi-ribbon but non-ribbon surface-link of trivial components is constructed. This construction is done by applying a positive solution to Cochran's conjecture, meaning that the sphere-knot obtained from the anti-parallel sphere-link of every non-ribbon sphere-knot by surgery along an s-nontrivial or s-trivial fusion 1-handle is a non-ribbon or trivial sphere-knot, respectively.

Fusion of boundary surface-link and ribbonness

A boundary surface-link of at least two components in the 4-sphere is proved to be a ribbon surface-link if the surface-link obtained from it by surgery along a local S-nontrivial fusion 1-handle system is a ribbon surface-link. This paper presents a detailed proof of this result, including an appendix, although a similar result was previously published with a portion of the proof missing. The result is stated using the concept of a \lq\lq local fusion 1-handle\rq\rq, which is more precise than the earlier concept of a \lq\lq pairwise fusion 1-handle\rq\rq.

Dehn quandles of surfaces and their bounded cohomology

We introduce new families of quandles associated with closed orientable surfaces that can distinguish surfaces up to homeomorphism. These quandles generalize the classical Dehn quandle and are defined, respectively, on isotopy classes of unoriented essential closed curves and on integral weighted multicurves. We establish their fundamental algebraic properties and construct a natural quandle covering relating the two families. We further investigate their large-scale geometry and prove that they are unbounded with respect to the quandle metric. We determine their second bounded quandle cohomology and show that its dimension equals the cardinality of the continuum. We also establish a quandle-theoretic analogue of the Gromov Mapping Theorem, showing that the natural projection from an abelian quandle extension onto its base quandle induces an injection on bounded quandle cohomology in every degree. Finally, motivated by recent developments in quandle algebras, we study idempotents in the integral quandle algebras associated with the classical Dehn quandle. In particular, we prove that the integral quandle algebra of the Dehn quandle of the torus admits no non-trivial idempotents.
