El Agente Quntur: Agentic Active-Space Selection for CASSCF

Abstract

Multireference calculations often require substantial human expertise and time to choose and refine an active space for the electronic states or chemical process of interest. This involves selecting which orbitals to include, verifying that the calculation describes the intended excited state, and deciding whether the results have converged. Here, we ask whether scientific agentic systems (harnesses) can make these decisions reliably. We use the El Agente Quntur multi-agent harness, with GPT-5.6 Sol and GPT-5.6 Terra as the underlying LLM components, to explore 32 diverse singlet excitations at fixed molecular geometries. The agents planned and executed calculations, choosing and refining active spaces under prompts that specified equal-weight two-singlet state-averaged CASSCF followed by strongly contracted NEVPT2 with def2-TZVPD. We evaluate excitation energies against published CASPT2 reference values at matching geometries and compare performance with six deterministic Active Space Finder protocols. Within the El Agente Quntur system, agents detect missing active orbitals, compare candidate excited states, and revise state assignments as calculations progress. Agentic execution reduced mean absolute error by 48\% relative to the state-of-the-art Active Space Finder protocol. We note that computational traces vary substantially across runs in both active space selection strategies and cost, even for the same molecule. Our results underscore the advantage of agentic active space selection over fixed workflows, yet leave room to improve efficiency through runtime-aware decision-making, reduced inter-agent communication overhead and redundancy, more systematic checks of state identity, and clearer stopping criteria.

Thermodynamics: Extending and Reconstructing of Classical Theoretical Framework

One deep problem that the traditional thermodynamics has faced since the beginning, I call it the predicament of equilibrium state. In this predicament, both the initial and the final states of a given system must be in equilibrium states, and the evolutionary processes from an initial to an final states must be assumed to be a series of quasi-static processes, because in non-equilibrium state, there are two intensive variables that anchored to the system or the locals are ill-defined, the real problem is, we did not know which extensive quantity that the temperature T and the pressure p are anchored to. In the traditional thermo-dynamics: there has neither a state quantity of heat, nor dynamics. This deep problem is derived from the absence of a fundamental physical quantity, the total energy of thermal motion in multiple levels, empirically be called as the heat energy, as a state quantity, which never been defined on its own but only implied within the thermodynamic equations. When the concept of the heat energy has been defined, the anchor that the temperature T and the pressure p are anchored to has been confirmed: the temperature T and the pressure p are the two intensive variables of the heat energy, thus, the predicament of equilibrium state has been completely broken through. What we are seeing is a groundbreaking overall progress, almost all the long-standing tricky problems in the traditional thermodynamics will be finally clarified. In this article, I will discuss some of the famous problems focusing on reconstructing a new theoretical framework: Thermodynamic processes are driven by the gradients of thermodynamic forces, the relationship between the states and the changes of a given system and the driving forces are the main themes of thermodynamics. What we see is a new narrative paradigm: there have both the state quantity of the heat energy, and also dynamics.

Variational Framework for Quantum Molecular Reaction Dynamics

This work describes a geometric framework on molecular reaction dynamics based on the variational principle, where the Schr{ö}dinger equation must be solved to ``see'' how a reaction occurs. First, the mathematical preliminaries are given by discussing the principle of least action and the mountain pass theorem. Second, we discuss the physical preliminaries, including the principle of equivalence for deriving the kinetic energy operator (KEO) and artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to build the potential energy surface (PES) in general spacetime. Moreover, we simplified electromagnetic interactions in curved spacetime within the molecular system and consequently, we are able to construct the nuclear Hamiltonian in nonzero curvature spacetime. This indicates possibility to introduce gauge fields through the curvature, such as additional term in the nuclear KEO near a conical intersection. Third, the single-particle approximation provides a powful ansatz to solve the Schr{ö}dinger equation by variational principle. Thus, one can formulate the variational approaches for either electronic structure or quantum dynamics. In this work, based on previous discussions ({\it Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys.} {\bf 27} (2025), 20397) we unified them by a geometric description, where the geometric phase is naturally introduced. Finally, due to optimization characteristic of the present theory, further discussions on the present theory from optimization insight are also given, including two postulates, generative AI techniques, role of perturbation, and Markov process in optimization.

On the Spin Symmetry of Fractional-Occupation Mean-Field Approaches

We identify a spin-symmetry dilemma rooted in the representability problem of fractional-occupation densities, which break spin symmetry even for restricted orbital references. We propose a resolution that leverages complex polarization to restore pure-state N-representability and exact spin eigenstates while retaining improvements to the energy and density from occupation smearing. Our results have implications for widely-used smearing methods in solid-state simulation and for their use as a proxy for static correlation in molecules.
