Level ordering in the linear $E \otimes e$ dynamic Jahn-Teller model

Abstract

The ground level of the linear $E\otimes e$ dynamic Jahn-Teller model has long been believed to be the doublet with vibronic angular momentum $j = \pm\tfrac12$. We prove that, for arbitrary coupling strength, the $n$th level $E_{nj}$ in the subspace of fixed $j$ strictly increases with $|j|$ for every $n$, $E_{n,1/2} < E_{n,3/2} < E_{n,5/2} < \cdots$; in particular, the ground level is always the $j = \pm\tfrac12$ doublet. The proof uses only a unitary transformation that lowers $j$ by one, combined with the variational principle. We also give an explicit lower bound on the gap $E_{0,j+1} - E_{0j}$.

Metamagnetic ripples in the UTe2 high magnetic field phase diagram

The heavy fermion metamagnet uranium ditelluride possesses two distinct magnetic field-induced superconducting states. One of these superconductive phases resides at magnetic fields immediately below a first-order metamagnetic transition to a field-polarized paramagnetic state at a field strength $H_m$, while the other exists predominantly above $H_m$. However, little is known about the microscopic properties of this polarized paramagnetic state. Here we report pulsed magnetic field measurements tracking the evolution of $H_m$ for polar and azimuthal inclinations of the magnetic field in the vicinity of the crystallographic $b-a$ plane. We uncover a region of the phase diagram at high fields > 50 T with a ripple-like non-monotonic dependence of $H_m$ on the orientation of field. Within this ripple in the metamagnetic transition surface, $H_m$ exhibits an anomalous temperature dependence, implying that here the polarized state has a lower entropy than the low field paramagnetic state. Our results point towards the presence of complex magnetic interactions and possible magnetic sub-phases at high magnetic fields in UTe$_2$, which may have important implications for the manifestation of exotic field-induced superconductivity.

Ultrastrong Coupling Signatures in Photon Statistics from Terahertz Higgs-Polaritons

The ultrastrong coupling regime of cavity photons and quantum materials has emerged as a pathway to modify materials properties, however definitive signatures of ultrastrong coupling remain elusive. Focusing on the quantum photon statistics of light transmitted through a cavity-embedded superconductor, we show that a two-photon Higgs polariton at strong coupling realizes a photonic nonlinearity at the single terahertz photon level. We find that as light-matter coupling increases, the photon statistics show pronounced changes due to the formation of a hybrid photon-matter dark-cavity state with finite photon occupancy, producing testable signatures of ultrastrong coupling. We derive a non-Markovian input output relation and study the cavity-embedded superconductor 2H-NbSe2 as it approaches ultrastrong light-matter coupling. Our results reveal a diagnostic for ultrastrong coupling in the two-photon coincidence statistics that is absent in total counts.

Twin Algebras: Condensable Algebras beyond Anyons

Condensable algebras in 2+1d non-chiral topological orders characterize gapped boundary conditions and interfaces. Applied to the Symmetry Topological Field Theory, they allow classification of symmetric gapped phases and impose sharp constraints on possible phase transitions. A condensable algebra is specified not only by its underlying set of anyons, which end on the boundary or interface, but also by its algebra structure. We introduce the concept of twin condensable algebras, which have the same anyon decomposition, but inequivalent algebra structure. We revisit the classification of condensable algebras in $\mathcal{Z}(\text{Vec}_G^ω)$, i.e. in group-theoretical topological orders for finite groups $G$ with anomaly $ω$. In this context we are able to identify twin algebras that arise from different mechanisms, such as subgroup data, SPT cocycles, and symmetry actions. In particular, we construct infinite families of examples of twins from so-called Gassmann triples, and exhibit cases in which the reduced topological orders are inequivalent despite having identical anyon content. Physically, twin algebras describe distinct symmetric phases that have isomorphic spaces of ground states, but inequivalent order parameters. Such twin phases never exhibit relative spontaneous symmetry breaking, and can be used to construct phase transitions without hidden symmetry breaking, which are intrinsically beyond Landau transitions.
