Resurgence and Modularity in the First Painlevé Equation

Abstract

For the first Painlevé equation, we relate three nonlinear Stokes maps associated with a full turn around infinity to modular transformations of the two-parameter tau function through the identity $\boldsymbol S_π\circ\boldsymbol S_0\circ \boldsymbol S_{-π}=\mathsf S\circ\mathsf T$. Here the subscripts label Borel directions, while $\mathsf S$ and $\mathsf T$ denote the modular generators. Working under the analytic assumptions of the topological recursion and exact WKB constructions, we compare Stokes multipliers of the associated isomonodromy system while tracking the homology basis of its elliptic spectral curve under rotations of the independent variable. For the sectors considered, we identify the known parameter transformation induced by an $8π/5$ rotation with the modular $T$-action and derive a new explicit parameter relation realizing the $S$-action for a $2π/5$ rotation. We also determine the multiplicative factors in the corresponding tau-function relations, including their normalization constants. Together, these results give an explicit realization of single-valuedness after one full turn around infinity for both the Painlevé transcendent and its tau function, with the tau-function prefactors cancelling by Abel's five-term identity for the Rogers dilogarithm.

Four-Fermion Deformations on Line Defects in QED$_4$ with Yukawas

We elucidate the dynamics induced by a Wilson Line of charge $q$ and electron charge $e$ in $QED_4$ coupled to a real scalar via Yukawa interactions. We observe that there is a range of the fixed product $e^2 q$ with $e\rightarrow 0$ and $q\rightarrow \infty$ for which four-fermion operators play a dominant role for the dynamics of the theory. We uncover the fixed-point dynamics of the theory and analyze their critical behavior.

The Baby Universe is Fine and the CFT Knows It: On Holography for Closed Universes

Big bang/big crunch closed universes can be realized in AdS/CFT, even though they lack asymptotically AdS boundaries. With enough bulk entanglement, the bulk Hilbert space of a closed universe can be holographically encoded in the CFT. We clarify the relation of this encoding to observer-clone proposals and refute recent arguments about the breakdown of semiclassical physics in such spaces. In the limit of no bulk entanglement, the holographic encoding breaks down. The oft-cited one-dimensional nature of the closed universe Hilbert space represents the limitation of the external (CFT) Hilbert space to access the quantum information in the closed universe, similar to the limitations imposed on observers outside a perfectly isolated quantum lab. We advocate that the CFT nevertheless continues to determine the physical properties of the closed universe in this regime, showing how to interpret this relationship in terms of a final state projection in the closed universe. We provide a dictionary between the final state wavefunction and CFT data. We propose a model of the emergence of an arrow of time in the universe with a given initial or final state projection. Finally, we show that the conventional EFT in the closed universe, without any projection, can be recovered as a maximally ignorant description of the final state. This conventional EFT is encoded in CFT data, and it can be probed by computing coarse-grained observables. We provide an example of one such observable. Taken together, these results amount to a clean bill of health for baby universes born of AdS/CFT.

Towards a Carrollian Description of Yang-Mills

We provide a theory defined purely on null infinity that describes Yang-Mills in the Minkowski space bulk. The dynamical field of our model is the characteristic data of the bulk gauge field, and the action combines an electric branch Carrollian kinetic term with non-local interactions of MHV type that link different points on the celestial sphere. We explicitly show how this theory recovers all MHV and NMHV tree amplitudes in Yang-Mills, and outline how arbitrary tree amplitudes may be obtained from its Feynman diagram expansion. The detailed expression we find for the NMHV amplitude appears to be new.
