New muon transfer cell for muonic x-ray spectroscopy on microgram-quantity targets based on liquid hydrogen
Abstract
The muon transfer method allows access to radioactive/rare atomic nuclei for determining their charge radii via muonic x-ray spectroscopy. In this study we present a new muon transfer cell based on liquid hydrogen optimized for low-energy x-ray spectroscopy by employing a thin-walled Mylar cell for the container of the liquid hydrogen. Based on simulations, the present liquid hydrogen cell achieves competitive efficiencies compared to existing devices using the muon transfer method. Additionally, the liquid-hydrogen-based muon transfer setup provides a short timescale for the diffusion process of the muonic hydrogen atoms in the cell, well below 200~ns.
