From Dye to Dynamics: Quantitative Measurements of Fluid Flows from Vortex Geometry
Abstract
Although vorticity and passive tracers (such as dye) are both transported by fluid flows, there are subtle differences in how this transport happens. This indicates that dye cannot be used to track vortex motion in experiments, even though it has often been used for this purpose. In this manuscript we show that under proper circumstances dye can be used to accurately track the center-lines of vortex filaments. Moreover, we show that a number of important fluid quantities, such as energy and helicity, can be computed in terms of the shape of the vortex center-line. As a result, dye-tracked vortices are a valuable tool for measuring the properties of fluid motion in a variety of experimental situations. Moreover, we discuss techniques by which could be used to extract more detailed vortex information in future work.
