On functional classes in higher-spin theory

Abstract

The factorization over the ideal in the $d$-dimensional Vasiliev theory requires an accurate description of the higher-spin algebra $\mathcal{A}$ and its twisted adjoint module $\mathcal{A}^{tw}$ as certain functional spaces. It is shown that the conditions of $\mathcal{A}$ to be closed under action of the Moyal star product, and of $\mathcal{A}^{tw}$ to be a star-product $\mathcal{A}$-module along with some auxiliary conditions lead to properly defined free-level factorization procedure. The conditions on admissible functions have simple algebraic form; in the case of $\mathcal{A}$ the analogous functional space has been considered by Soloviev \cite{Soloviev:2013iba}. The relation of the obtained functional classes to the locality problem in the Vasiliev theory is discussed. In particular it is observed that certain non-local expressions diverge due to properties of $\mathcal{A}^{tw}$ while the spin-local expressions are well-defined.

Four-Fermion Deformations on Line Defects in QED$_4$ with Yukawas

We elucidate the dynamics induced by a Wilson Line of charge $q$ and electron charge $e$ in $QED_4$ coupled to a real scalar via Yukawa interactions. We observe that there is a range of the fixed product $e^2 q$ with $e\rightarrow 0$ and $q\rightarrow \infty$ for which four-fermion operators play a dominant role for the dynamics of the theory. We uncover the fixed-point dynamics of the theory and analyze their critical behavior.

The Baby Universe is Fine and the CFT Knows It: On Holography for Closed Universes

Big bang/big crunch closed universes can be realized in AdS/CFT, even though they lack asymptotically AdS boundaries. With enough bulk entanglement, the bulk Hilbert space of a closed universe can be holographically encoded in the CFT. We clarify the relation of this encoding to observer-clone proposals and refute recent arguments about the breakdown of semiclassical physics in such spaces. In the limit of no bulk entanglement, the holographic encoding breaks down. The oft-cited one-dimensional nature of the closed universe Hilbert space represents the limitation of the external (CFT) Hilbert space to access the quantum information in the closed universe, similar to the limitations imposed on observers outside a perfectly isolated quantum lab. We advocate that the CFT nevertheless continues to determine the physical properties of the closed universe in this regime, showing how to interpret this relationship in terms of a final state projection in the closed universe. We provide a dictionary between the final state wavefunction and CFT data. We propose a model of the emergence of an arrow of time in the universe with a given initial or final state projection. Finally, we show that the conventional EFT in the closed universe, without any projection, can be recovered as a maximally ignorant description of the final state. This conventional EFT is encoded in CFT data, and it can be probed by computing coarse-grained observables. We provide an example of one such observable. Taken together, these results amount to a clean bill of health for baby universes born of AdS/CFT.

Towards a Carrollian Description of Yang-Mills

We provide a theory defined purely on null infinity that describes Yang-Mills in the Minkowski space bulk. The dynamical field of our model is the characteristic data of the bulk gauge field, and the action combines an electric branch Carrollian kinetic term with non-local interactions of MHV type that link different points on the celestial sphere. We explicitly show how this theory recovers all MHV and NMHV tree amplitudes in Yang-Mills, and outline how arbitrary tree amplitudes may be obtained from its Feynman diagram expansion. The detailed expression we find for the NMHV amplitude appears to be new.
