Enhanced Signal and Excited-State Control in Nonlocal Lattice Correlators

Abstract

Nonlocal correlation functions underpin lattice calculations of parton physics. However, their extraction is limited by a rapidly deteriorating signal-to-noise ratio with increasing Euclidean separation and hadron momentum, and by excited-state contamination. We propose a new fitting strategy that enhances control over both: by taking the ratio of nonlocal to local correlators, we can project out the dominant ground-state dynamics with a signal that is much cleaner and far less sensitive to excited states than the conventional approach. We demonstrate the method on the quark and gluon PDF, the quark GPD and TMDPDF. The results are consistent with those from the conventional three-point/two-point ratio fit but exhibit markedly improved precision and stability, and extend the accessible range to larger hadron momenta. For nonforward matrix elements such as GPDs, our strategy greatly simplifies the analysis procedure. Our method applies to general Dirac and momentum structures, for connected and disconnected contributions, and extends naturally to other nonlocal correlators, making it immediately deployable in existing lattice programs toward precision hadron structure.

Weak (quasi-)PDFs from the lattice

Future colliders will be able to probe the electroweak substructure of particles. An accurate description of this substructure may necessitate electroweak PDFs, similarly to QCD. We investigate therefore the Higgs and W/Z PDFs in a reduced Standard Model setup using lattice methods, determining the quasi-PDFs, and, to lowest order, the resulting PDFs. While uncertainties remain, the results show interesting structures in line with expectations from gauge invariance.

Complex potential and the thermal width of quarkonium in quark-gluon plasma

We study the complex heavy quark anti-quark potential in lattice 2+1 flavor QCD at non-zero temperature. We point out a close relation between the imaginary part of the potential and the thermal quarkonium width. Using this relation, we estimate the thermal width of charmonia and bottomonia at high temperatures, which are not yet accessible with direct lattice QCD calculations of the quarkonium correlation functions and compare these to the results of the T-matrix analysis. For some of the excited quarkonia states, our estimates of the thermal width are smaller than the ones obtained in the T-matrix analysis.

Structure of QC$_2$D ground state fields at nonzero matter densities

A quantitative investigation into the modification of ground-state field structures in two-color QCD (QC$_2$D) is presented at finite chemical potential. Using lattice simulations with Wilson gauge and fermion actions, we explore the chromo-electromagnetic field strengths under varying matter densities. To ensure accurate measurements, we develop and calibrate two highly improved topological charge operators and evaluate four gradient flow actions. Our results reveal a finite-volume crossover in the regime of the anticipated phase boundary at $μ= m_π/2$, with both chromoelectric and chromomagnetic field strengths suppressed before recovering and exceeding vacuum values at higher chemical potentials. We find the difference between the squared chromoelectric and chromomagnetic field strengths, $E^2-B^2$, to increase in magnitude monotonically with increasing chemical potential. At $aμ=0.7$, we find an $11\%$ suppression of $E^2$, a relatively small effect. A systematic analysis using sigmoid fits of lattice simulations in the crossover regime is performed to confirm the critical chemical potential obtained from the field structure is in agreement with the phase boundary at $m_π/ 2$. These findings provide new insight into non-Abelian ground-state vacuum field structures and offer a foundation for future studies in real QCD.
