Bulk gap stability and spectral flow for fermions with weak long-range interactions

Abstract

We prove that weak long-range many-body interactions preserve the bulk gap of a free fermion system and that a quasi-local spectral flow transports the free ground state to ground states of the interacting system. Let $Φ_h$ be a free fermionic interaction, possibly including pairing terms, whose infinite-volume Majorana coefficient operator $h$ has no spectrum in $(-g,g)$, and let $\mathcal V$ be an even self-adjoint many-body interaction. For sufficiently small $|λ|$, we construct pure ground states $ω_λ$ of the interacting bulk system $Φ_λ=Φ_h+λ\mathcal V$ and quasi-local automorphisms $β_{0,λ}$ such that $ω_λ=ω_0\circβ_{0,λ}$, where $ω_0$ is the free ground state of $Φ_h$. Each $ω_λ$ has a GNS Hamiltonian with gap at least $g-C_*|λ| \|\mathcal V\|_*$, where $\|\cdot\|_*$ is the relevant interaction norm. Our result allows polynomial decay of both the free coefficients and the many-body interaction. For two-site interactions on a uniformly discrete point set $Γ\subset\mathbb{R}^d$, a sufficient condition is decay as $(1+|x-y|)^{-\varpi}$ with $\varpi>2d$, for both the hopping and pairing coefficients and the interaction terms. The spectral-flow generator preserves the spatial exponent of the polynomial interaction norm, and its automorphisms satisfy locality bounds at that exponent. If $h$ and $\mathcal V$ have stretched-exponential decay, so does the spectral-flow generator. The proof constructs the spectral flow and establishes the gap through an excitation-number comparison, using polynomial propagation bounds for evolved interactions proved in a companion paper.

Modeling of point charges with distributions, regularizations, and generalized functions

We apply regularization and generalized function techniques to the classical electromagnetic field of a point-charge, following a strategy by the physicist A. Gsponer 2007-2009, thereby extending it and adding rigor.. We show how the Liénard-Wiechert potential emerges essentially from the basic geometry of Minkowski space, namely by action of the d'Alembertian on a generating vector field, which is defined via a spacetime interval between an observer and the point-charge at retarded proper time. Furthermore, for a charged particle in its rest frame, we discuss generalized functions aspects of the electric monopole, magnetic dipole, electron singularity, and self-energy, where infinitely large generalized numbers occur whose concrete representations can be applied in field renormalization.

Variational derivation of the homogeneous Boltzmann equation

We introduce a variational formulation of the homogeneous Boltzmann equation, with hard-sphere cross section, which selects the unique energy conserving solution. We prove that this solution arises from the microscopic dynamics, namely Kac's walk, and we establish the propagation in time of entropic chaoticity, under the minimal assumption that the initial distribution is entropically chaotic.

Noether symmetries and conservation laws of a class of time-dependent multidimensional nonlinear wave equations

Conservation laws of a class of time-dependent damped nonlinear multidimensional wave equations are derived by Noether's theorem. For arbitrary nonzero damping coefficient and nonlinear interaction term, its infinitesimal variational symmetries span a Euclidean algebra $\euclid(n)$ of space translations and rotations. They produce conservation of linear and angular momentums. For some specific forms of these two terms symmetry algebra is enlarged to a subalgebra of the conformal algebra $\conf(1,n)$ and in this case more interesting conservation laws are found.
