Thermodynamics of Swirling Black Holes and Kerr-Taub-NUT

Abstract

We establish the first law of black hole thermodynamics for the recently discovered Kerr swirling (KS) and accelerated Kerr swirling (AKS) black hole solutions. We also revisit the first law for the Kerr-Taub-NUT (KTN) spacetime. Guided by Noether's original insight that global symmetries give rise to conservation laws, we employ and adapt the surface charge method for computing the associated charges (mass and angular momentum) in the presence of spacetime string-like defects (conical singularities) along the axes of both KS and KTN black holes. We obtain finite integrated charges in a quasi-local manner, without relying on the non-flat asymptotic regions characteristic of these spacetimes. We then establish a first law without introducing independent stringy terms unrelated to symmetries. For both KS and KTN, the quantities that play the role of the black hole entropy differ from the simple geometrical rule of one-fourth of the horizon area. This mismatch arises because we keep first-law charges associated with conservation laws. It indicates that standard formulas may not be naively used for black holes with string-like defects; they have a different topology and suggest the need for a new geometrical framework. In stark contrast, for the AKS spacetime, which can be regularized outside the singularity and lacks string-like defects, we find that the charges are consistent with a first law having the usual one-fourth of the area entropy. We first determine the mass using the Christodoulou-Ruffini formula and then check its agreement with the result obtained from the surface charge method.

Four-Fermion Deformations on Line Defects in QED$_4$ with Yukawas

We elucidate the dynamics induced by a Wilson Line of charge $q$ and electron charge $e$ in $QED_4$ coupled to a real scalar via Yukawa interactions. We observe that there is a range of the fixed product $e^2 q$ with $e\rightarrow 0$ and $q\rightarrow \infty$ for which four-fermion operators play a dominant role for the dynamics of the theory. We uncover the fixed-point dynamics of the theory and analyze their critical behavior.

The Baby Universe is Fine and the CFT Knows It: On Holography for Closed Universes

Big bang/big crunch closed universes can be realized in AdS/CFT, even though they lack asymptotically AdS boundaries. With enough bulk entanglement, the bulk Hilbert space of a closed universe can be holographically encoded in the CFT. We clarify the relation of this encoding to observer-clone proposals and refute recent arguments about the breakdown of semiclassical physics in such spaces. In the limit of no bulk entanglement, the holographic encoding breaks down. The oft-cited one-dimensional nature of the closed universe Hilbert space represents the limitation of the external (CFT) Hilbert space to access the quantum information in the closed universe, similar to the limitations imposed on observers outside a perfectly isolated quantum lab. We advocate that the CFT nevertheless continues to determine the physical properties of the closed universe in this regime, showing how to interpret this relationship in terms of a final state projection in the closed universe. We provide a dictionary between the final state wavefunction and CFT data. We propose a model of the emergence of an arrow of time in the universe with a given initial or final state projection. Finally, we show that the conventional EFT in the closed universe, without any projection, can be recovered as a maximally ignorant description of the final state. This conventional EFT is encoded in CFT data, and it can be probed by computing coarse-grained observables. We provide an example of one such observable. Taken together, these results amount to a clean bill of health for baby universes born of AdS/CFT.

Towards a Carrollian Description of Yang-Mills

We provide a theory defined purely on null infinity that describes Yang-Mills in the Minkowski space bulk. The dynamical field of our model is the characteristic data of the bulk gauge field, and the action combines an electric branch Carrollian kinetic term with non-local interactions of MHV type that link different points on the celestial sphere. We explicitly show how this theory recovers all MHV and NMHV tree amplitudes in Yang-Mills, and outline how arbitrary tree amplitudes may be obtained from its Feynman diagram expansion. The detailed expression we find for the NMHV amplitude appears to be new.
