SpikeAD: Toward Multiplication-Free Spike-Controlled Neuromorphic Architecture for Energy-Efficient Small Object Detection

Abstract

Energy-constrained aerial platforms require accurate object detection under strict power and latency budgets, yet conventional inference remains bottlenecked by multiply-accumulate (MAC) operations. While spiking neural networks (SNNs) offer bio-inspired efficiency, many SNN detectors retain hybrid MACs in intermediate layers, or use spike-driven inference where multi-level spikes are interpreted as repeated binary events. We propose SpikeAD, a direct-trained spike-controlled neuromorphic aerial detector. In SpikeAD, sparse bounded integer spikes act strictly as multiplexer control signals for multiplier-free shift-add inference, preserving spike boundaries throughout a four-scale bidirectional feature pyramid. We introduce the Spike-Gated Multi-Scale (SGMS) block, performing receptive field expansion with activity-driven channel selection, implementable with adders and comparators. Evaluated on VisDrone and DOTA and across Nano, Small, and Medium variants, SpikeAD achieves up to 46.2% mAP@50 on VisDrone (+4.8% over SNN prior art), and generalizes to oriented bounding box (77.6% mAP@50 on DOTA) using the proposed SpikeOBB head. Under the Horowitz 45nm arithmetic energy model following standard methodology in SNN literature, SpikeAD achieves up to 18.9x estimated reduction relative to an equivalent MAC-based implementation. We propose the Spike Processing Core (SPC), an RTL compute primitive to validate hardware realizability for reconfigurable and scalable custom accelerator chip design on FPGA/ASIC, highlighting a promising path toward next-generation ultra-low-power neuromorphic processors for aerial object detection. Link to the open-source and open-weight GitHub repository will be added upon publication.

Knowledge-Guided Memetic Algorithm for Capacitated Arc Routing Problems with Time-Dependent Service Costs

The capacitated arc routing problem with time-dependent service costs (CARPTDSC) is a challenging combinatorial optimization problem that arises from real-world applications. CARPTDSC has two main challenges in reducing computational time. First, it is an NP-hard problem. Second, the time-dependent service costs of tasks require frequent evaluations during the search process, significantly increasing the computational burden. These challenges make it difficult for existing algorithms to perform efficient searches, often resulting in limited efficiency. To address these issues, this paper proposes a knowledge-guided memetic algorithm with golden section search and negatively correlated search (KGMA-GN), where two knowledge-guided strategies are introduced to improve efficiency. First, a knowledge-guided initialization strategy (KGIS) is proposed to generate high-quality initial solutions to speed up convergence. Second, a knowledge-guided small-step-size local search strategy (KGSLSS) is proposed to filter out invalid moves, thereby reducing unnecessary evaluations. Experimental results on five benchmark test sets, including both small- and larger-scale instances, demonstrate that KGMA-GN achieves higher search efficiency than the state-of-the-art methods. Moreover, the ablation study further confirms that the knowledge-guided local search operators in KGSLSS can significantly reduce runtime compared to traditional operators, especially for the knowledge-guided swap operator, which achieves more than a tenfold improvement in speed.

FiTS: Interpretable Spiking Neurons via Frequency Selectivity and Temporal Shaping

Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) are a promising framework for event-driven temporal processing. Prior work has improved temporal modeling through richer neuron dynamics and network-level mechanisms such as recurrence and delays, but it remains unclear how individual spiking neurons should specialize within a network. In this work, we introduce FiTS, a spiking neuron that factorizes temporal computation within each neuron into Frequency Selectivity (FS) and Temporal Shaping (TS). The FS module parameterizes each neuron's target frequency as the maximizer of its subthreshold magnitude response, while the TS module reshapes when frequency components contribute to membrane voltage accumulation through group-delay modulation. On auditory benchmarks where frequency selectivity and timing are central to the input structure, FiTS consistently improves over a plain Leaky Integrate-and-Fire (LIF) baseline in simple feedforward SNNs without recurrence or network-level delays, while remaining competitive with strong temporal SNN baselines. Beyond accuracy, the learned target frequencies and group-delay shifts provide interpretable neuron-level summaries of the frequency and timing organization learned within the network. Our code is available at https://github.com/kaistmm/FiTS.

Refined CMA-ES for CEC 2026 Bound-Constrained Single-Objective Optimization

We present a simplified and parameter-adjusted variant of CMA-ES designed for the CEC 2026 Bound-Constrained Single-Objective Optimization competition. Unlike typical algorithmic developments that increase complexity by adding mechanisms, Refined CMA-ES systematically removes components that do not improve performance, such as the flat-land escape, while retaining standard features that provide measurable benefits. Adjusting key parameters (population size and initial step-size) yields substantial gains, outperforming the baseline CMA-ES and several state-of-the-art competitors. The paper highlights the practical relevance of individual CMA-ES components under the CEC 2026 ranking, which equally weights solution accuracy and convergence speed, demonstrating that simplification combined with improved parameter settings can lead to superior performance.
