Measurement of Hadronic Recoil Mass Moments in Semileptonic B Decay

Abstract

We present a preliminary measurement of the composition of inclusive semileptonic B meson decays using 9.4 fb^{-1} of e^+e^- data taken with the CLEO detector at the Upsilon(4S) resonance. In addition to measuring the charged lepton kinematics, the neutrino four-vector is inferred using the hermeticity of the detector. We perform a maximum likelihood fit over the full three-dimensional differential decay distribution for the fractional contributions from the B->X_c l nu processes with X_c = D, D^*, D^**, and non-resonant X_c, and the process B -> X_u l nu. From the fit results we extract = (0.456 +- 0.014 +- 0.045 +- 0.109) GeV^2/c^4 with minimum lepton energy of 1.0 GeV and (0.293 +- 0.012 +- 0.033 +- 0.048) GeV^2/c^4 with minimum lepton energy of 1.5 GeV. The uncertainties are from statistics, detector systematic effects, and model dependence, respectively.

Search for the $^{16}\text{O}(ppp) \rightarrow ^{13}\text{C} π^+ π^+ e^+$ Decay Mode in Super-Kamiokande Using Machine Learning Techniques

We report a new partial lifetime limit of $4.2 \times 10^{32}$ years for the trinucleon decay mode $^{16}\text{O}(ppp) \rightarrow ^{13}\text{C} π^+ π^+ e^+$, obtained from a search conducted using the Super-Kamiokande detector with 0.401 megaton-years of exposure across five operational periods (SK-I: 1996--2001, SK-II: 2002--2005, SK-III: 2006--2008, SK-IV: 2008--2018, SK-V: 2019--2020). This represents an improvement of six orders of magnitude over previous experimental constraints. The analysis utilizes a convolutional neural network (CNN) incorporating an attention mechanism---a computational technique that enables the model to focus on the most relevant regions of Cherenkov ring patterns---to enhance event classification, thereby improving the sensitivity of the search. This is the first application of a CNN to a nucleon decay search in Super-Kamiokande. Furthermore, the large dataset available in Super-Kamiokande (hereafter "SK") strengthens the statistical power of the study, enabling a more stringent constraint than those set by prior experiments.

Precision Studies and Searches for CP Asymmetries in the Inclusive Decay $Λ_{c}^{+}\to ΛX$

Based on $e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation data collected with the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies from $4.600$ to $4.699~\mathrm{GeV}$, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $4.5~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$, we present the first measurement of the longitudinal polarization of $Λ$ hyperon produced in the inclusive decay $Λ_c^+ \to ΛX$, where $X$ denotes any allowed final states. The polarizations are determined to be $P_Λ=-0.393\pm0.055_{\rm stat}\pm0.020_{\rm syst}$ and $P_{\barΛ}=0.288\pm0.056_{\rm stat}\pm0.017_{\rm syst}$. A search for CP violation is performed using an asymmetry constructed from the $Λ$ polarization and the $Λ\to pπ^{-}$ decay asymmetry parameter, and $A_{\mathrm{CP}}^{\mathrm{pol}}=0.15\pm0.12_{\rm stat}\pm0.03_{\rm syst}$ was obtained. Furthermore, an updated measurement of the absolute branching fraction is reported as $B(Λ_c^+ \to ΛX)=(38.07\pm0.38_{\rm stat}\pm0.49_{\rm syst})\%$, representing a fourfold precision improvement over the previous BESIII measurement. A search for CP violation in the decay rate yields $A_{\mathrm{CP}}^{\mathrm{dir}}=(1.5\pm1.0_{\rm stat}\pm1.0_{\rm syst})\%$. No evidence for CP violation is observed in this inclusive charm baryon decay. The subscripts `stat' and `syst' denote statistical and systematic uncertainties, respectively.

The mathematical theory of photomultiplier tube calibration

In this technical note we describe the main features of the mathematical theory of photomultiplier tube (PMT) calibration. Attention was paid to explain the various arguments and concepts in a simple and pedagogical manner that everybody understands. The basic operational principles of a PMT are discussed from a theoretical standpoint. The essential steps of its function (photoconversion, focusing, multiplication, etc.) are laid down together with the mathematical schemes necessary to model the charge output of a PMT when illuminated by a faint poissonian light source. In case of important omissions we direct the reader to some of the standard references. The most common numerical methods, used to calculate the charge amplification function $S_R(x)$, are also presented. As an example, we plot $S_R(x)$ utilizing a gamma function model for the single photoelectron (SPE) response and showcase its main characteristics. The basic techniques for gain calibration are also introduced, and we probed their precision using toy Monte Carlo data. Additionally, data from a Hamamatsu R1408 PMT were analyzed. Finally, we show how the presence of soft charge component can affect the results of gain determination. We conclude this report with some general comments regarding \emph{in situ} calibration of large-scale detectors. We hope that this document can serve as a reference for students and young researchers that want to learn more about the theory of PMT calibration.
