Abstract

I discuss new experimental results reported at this conference that bear directly on three previously reported anomalies: the excess of high Q^2 events at HERA; the excess of W + 1 jet events, relative to W's without jets, in D0 data; and the excess of high E_T inclusive jets observed by CDF. The new results all point in the direction of reducing the experimental significance of these excesses.

Prospects for Precision $YN$ and $\bar{n}N$ Measurements with an LH$_2$/LD$_2$ Target in the BESIII Detector

Tagged hyperon and antineutron beams from $J/ψ$ and $ψ(3686)$ decays allow BESIII to study (anti)hyperon--nucleon ($YN$) and antineutron--nucleon ($\bar{n}N$) scattering, but the present measurements use the beam pipe as the target, whose only free protons are in a thin cooling-oil layer. We present a conceptual feasibility study of a liquid hydrogen (LH$_2$) or liquid deuterium (LD$_2$) target between the beam pipe and the Cylindrical Gas Electron Multiplier Inner Tracker. Relative to the beam pipe, a 30~mm LH$_2$ layer increases the effective free-proton areal density by factors of 7--22 for $Λ$, $Σ^{+}$, $Ξ$, and $\bar n$ beams (3.4 for $Ω^-$). A 30~mm LD$_2$ layer gives 0.9--2.9 times the effective neutron areal density for the same beams (0.4 for $Ω^-$) and replaces the composite Be, C, and Au nuclei with the deuteron. These ratios characterize the target itself and do not include channel-dependent efficiencies, backgrounds, or deuteron corrections. In detector simulations without localized support material, the target affects tracking mainly below 0.5~GeV/$c$; above this momentum, proton, kaon, and pion efficiencies stay within 1.6 percentage points of the baseline. In a signal-only full-event simulation of $\bar np\to2π^+π^-$, the LH$_2$-to-beam-pipe selection-efficiency ratio is 0.86, and the vertex and energy-closure resolutions are comparable to those for beam-pipe interactions. An internal LH$_2$/LD$_2$ target is thus a promising concept for higher-statistics and less model-dependent $YN$ and $\bar nN$ measurements at BESIII, requiring further engineering and channel-level validation.

Light meson decays at BESIII

The world's largest sample of $J/ψ$ events accumulated with the BESIII detector offers a unique opportunity to investigate $η$ and $η'$ physics via the radiative transition processes $J/ψ\to γη/η'$. A selection of recent highlights in light meson spectroscopy achieved at BESIII is reviewed in these proceedings, including evidence for the cusp effect in $η' \to π^0π^0η$, precision studies of the decay mechanisms of $η\to 3π$ and $η' \to 4π$, electromagnetic transition form factor measurements with $η/η' \to γe^+e^-$ and $η' \to π^+π^-l^+l^-$, as well as searches for rare decays of $η$ and $η'$ into lepton pairs, including $η\to l^+l^-$ and $η/η' \to l^+l^-l^+l^-$~($l = e, μ$).

AgentRivet: an automated system for producing Rivet routines from journal publications

Particle physics collider experiments provide Rivet routines as part of the analysis preservation strategy for model-independent measurements. Rivet is a C++ toolkit that allow new theoretical models to be compared to the measurements, thus aiding the development and tuning of Monte Carlo event generators as well as searches for physics beyond the Standard Model. However, analysis coverage is known to be incomplete, with only 39% of measurements having documented and publicly available Rivet routines. In this article, we design and implement an automated workflow based on Large Language Models with the goal of providing the missing routines. This multi-step workflow, referred to as AgentRivet, extracts the physics analysis information from published papers and writes the missing Rivet routines, with intermediate code- and physics- reviews as part of an autonomous quality control. We report the results obtained using commercial Large Language Models, provided by OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, for two recent measurements from the ATLAS and CMS experiments. We find that AgentRivet produces competent Rivet routines with few syntax errors. The physics fidelity of the routines is reasonable and follows the explanations given in the relevant publications. Nevertheless, physics-implementation issues do arise and are investigated using the artefacts produced by AgentRivet. The majority of physics implementation issues arise from subtle-but-ambiguous definitions in the given publication, although some models struggle to implement complex observables even when clear definitions are given.
