Massive spinning particles and the geometry of null curves

Abstract

We study the simplest geometrical particle model associated with null paths in four-dimensional Minkowski space-time. The action is given by the pseudo-arclength of the particle worldline. We show that the reduced classical phase space of this system coincides with that of a massive spinning particle of spin $s=α^2/M$, where $M$ is the particle mass, and $α$ is the coupling constant in front of the action. Consistency of the associated quantum theory requires the spin $s$ to be an integer or half integer number, thus implying a quantization condition on the physical mass $M$ of the particle. Then, standard quantization techniques show that the corresponding Hilbert spaces are solution spaces of the standard relativistic massive wave equations. Therefore this geometrical particle model provides us with an unified description of Dirac fermions ($s=1/2$) and massive higher spin fields.

The Origin and Fate of Rapid Negative Modes in Coleman--De Luccia Tunneling

Coleman--De Luccia tunneling can exhibit an infinite tower of rapidly oscillating negative modes, complicating the semiclassical evaluation of the path integral. We show that this tower does not represent infinitely many bounce-specific instabilities, but instead is tied to a single underlying gravitational conformal sector. This sector is exposed in two different ways: by a large scalar gradient near the bubble wall and by the turning point of a compact Euclidean geometry. The corresponding conformal sector is already present in fluctuations about the false vacuum. Treating the bounce and the false vacuum in the same well-defined gauge and with a common regulator, we find that their high-frequency negative spectra approach one another. The ultraviolet tower therefore cancels from the relative negative-mode count, leaving a single bounce-specific negative mode. This finite-backreaction spectral cancellation provides a corresponding picture of the result obtained in the small-backreaction limit.

Higher-form Symmetries of Linearized Gravity in Maximally Symmetric Spaces

We formulate the gravitational field on maximally symmetric spacetimes as a gauge theory, and investigate higher-form symmetries of the linearized gravitational field via a series expansion in Newton's gravitational constant. To treat gravity as a gauge theory, the MacDowell-Mansouri formulation based on Cartan geometry is utilized. We show the existence of a 1-form symmetry in linearized gravity on Minkowski spacetime. Furthermore, for other maximally symmetric spacetimes (de Sitter and anti-de Sitter spacetimes) with a small cosmological constant, we demonstrate the existence of an approximate 1-form symmetry in the corresponding linearized gravity, detailing its explicit dependence on the cosmological constant.

A Concise Course in String Theory

These lecture notes offer a concise introduction to string theory, based on a one-semester graduate course taught at Fudan University, and develop the subject from the string sigma model action to the AdS/CFT correspondence. The exposition is deliberately compact, and is addressed to graduate students who seek a coherent overview of the foundations of the subject rather than an exhaustive treatment.
