Black Holes and Sub-millimeter Dimensions

Abstract

Recently, a new framework for solving the hierarchy problem was proposed which does not rely on low energy supersymmetry or technicolor. The fundamental Planck mass is at a TeV and the observed weakness of gravity at long distances is due the existence of new sub-millimeter spatial dimensions. In this letter, we study how the properties of black holes are altered in these theories. Small black holes---with Schwarzschild radii smaller than the size of the new spatial dimensions---are quite different. They are bigger, colder, and longer-lived than a usual $(3+1)$-dimensional black hole of the same mass. Furthermore, they primarily decay into harmless bulk graviton modes rather than standard-model degrees of freedom. We discuss the interplay of our scenario with the holographic principle. Our results also have implications for the bounds on the spectrum of primordial black holes (PBHs) derived from the photo-dissociation of primordial nucleosynthesis products, distortion of the diffuse gamma-ray spectrum, overclosure of the universe, gravitational lensing, as well as the phenomenology of black hole production. For example, the bound on the spectral index of the primordial spectrum of density perturbations is relaxed from 1.25 to 1.45-1.60 depending on the epoch of the PBH formation. In these scenarios PBHs provide interesting dark matter candidates; for 6 extra dimensions MACHO candidates with mass $\sim 0.1M_\odot$ can arise. For 2 or 3 extra dimensions PBHs with mass $\sim 2000 M_\odot$ can occur and may act as both dark matter and seeds for early galaxy and QSO formation.

Local uniqueness of the Black String with small circle size

In this article we study uniqueness of the Black String, i.e. the product of 4-dimensional Schwarzschild space with a circle of length L. In arXiv:2410.20967, this was reduced to a non-linear elliptic PDE, and we use this setup to show that for small L the Black String is infinitesimally rigid as a Ricci-flat metric. Using a fixed point theorem, we prove that this implies local uniqueness, i.e. there exist no other Ricci-flat metrics near the Black String, and we give bounds for the size of the neighborhood in which the Black String is unique. We compare this with the toy problem of a scalar field satisfying an elliptic equation that was already solved in arXiv:2410.20967 using different methods. In this case we can use the fixed point theorem method to prove not just a local but a global statement.

Decrease of the entanglement entropy of the Hawking radiation induced by backreaction in the Bose-Einstein condensate

We analytically study the effect of backreaction from analog Hawking radiation on its entanglement entropy in the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). The backreaction is expected to play an essential role in the decrease of the entanglement entropy and in realizing the Page curve. Since the BEC theory has microscopic Hamiltonian and thus exhibits unitarity, it is desirable to reproduce the Page curve explicitly by using the Hamiltonian. As the first step towards this goal, we concretely study the BEC with a step-like configuration that has been extensively studied in the literature. By using the microscopic theory, we derive an explicit form of backreaction from analog Hawking radiation. Combining it with the known results of the Bogoliubov coefficients, we analytically compute the entanglement entropy of the Hawking radiation, and show that the backreaction reduces the growth of the entanglement entropy as expected for sufficiently low energy modes over a wide range of the parameter characterizing the step-like configuration.

Batalin-Vilkovisky quantization with an angular twist

We construct cubic scalar field theory on $λ$-Minkowski space by combining the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism with harmonic analysis, and produce two inequivalent noncommutative quantum field theories. The braided theory is based on a braided $L_\infty$-algebra whereby covariance dictates a spectral decomposition into cylindrical Bessel functions that diagonalise the angular Drinfel'd twist; in this theory we find the usual logarithmic ultraviolet divergences and confirm the absence of UV/IR mixing. The standard noncommutative theory is based on a classical $L_\infty$-algebra; in this theory we relate the spectral decompositions into plane wave and cylindrical harmonic eigenmodes of the Klein-Gordan operator, we verify the planar equivalence theorem, and we demonstrate a periodic form of UV/IR mixing in which non-planar correlators are generically ultraviolet finite but become non-analytic on an infinite lattice of exceptional momenta.
