On moduli spaces of symplectic forms

Abstract

We prove that, for any n, there are simply-connected four-manifolds which admit n-tuples of symplectic forms whose first Chern classes have pairwise different divisibilities in integral cohomology. It follows that the moduli space of symplectic forms modulo diffeomorphisms on such a manifold has at least n connected components.

$b^k$-Symplectic Manifolds and $[Q,R]=0$

We study the geometric quantization of $b^k$-symplectic manifolds using the integrability of Lie algebroids. Using a groupoid index, we define a quantization for $b^k$-symplectic manifolds whose singular locus is a normal crossing divisor and which carry a Hamiltonian action of a compact connected Lie group, generalizing Guillemin--Miranda--Weitsman in a few directions. Firstly, we show this quantization is the index of a $\spinc$-Dirac operator, answering a question of theirs. In particular, it is a finite-dimensional virtual representation for every $k$, whereas their formal quantization is infinite-dimensional when the modular degrees are even. Secondly, our symplectic form can have singularities along hypersurfaces which can have normal crossings. Finally, we prove that quantization commutes with reduction for the Hamiltonian action of a possibly non-abelian compact connected Lie group, when the modular degrees are odd. In the case when the modular degrees are not odd, we give an example when $[Q,R]=0$ fails.

The ECH and alternative ECH capacities of closed symplectic 4-manifolds

We show that the ECH capacities of every closed symplectic 4-manifold are infinite. We also give the first examples of symplectic 4-manifolds whose alternative ECH capacities are infinite. We verify the ECH Weyl law holds with bounded subleading asymptotics for the alternative ECH capacities of any closed symplectic 4-manifold with $b_2^+=1$ or any smooth domain therewithin.

Symplectic Yang-Mills Theory

On a symplectic manifold, any differential two-form has a natural decomposition into two components: a primitive part and a non-primitive one. Applying this decomposition to the curvature two-form of a principal bundle over a symplectic manifold, we obtain a natural splitting of the Yang-Mills (YM) functional into two functionals that intrinsically depend on the symplectic structure: the primitive Yang-Mills (PYM) functional and the trace Yang-Mills (TYM) functional. We work out the basic properties of the critical solutions of these two functionals. The PYM functional in particular exhibits many of the desirable properties of the YM functional, including the ellipticity of its Euler-Lagrange equations and an algebraic classification of its flat solutions on G-bundles. We also prove a monotonicity formula for the PYM functional as a first step towards characterizing its moduli space of solutions.
