Nonlinear Stokes phenomena in first or second order differential equations

Abstract

We study singularity formation in nonlinear differential equations of order $m\leqslant 2$, $y^{(m)}=A(x^{-1},y)$. We assume $A$ is analytic at $(0,0)$ and $\partial_y A(0,0)=λ\ne 0$ (say, $λ=(-1)^m$). If $m=1$ we assume $A(0,\cdot)$ is meromorphic and nonlinear. If $m=2$, we assume $A(0,\cdot)$ is analytic except for isolated singularities, and also that $\int_{s_0}^\infty |Φ(s)|^{-1/2}d|s|<\infty$ along some path avoiding the zeros and singularities of $Φ$, where $Φ(s)=\int_{0}^s A(0,τ)dτ$. Let $H_α=\{z:|z|>a>0,\arg(z)\in (-α,α)\}$. If the Stokes constant $S^+$ associated to $\RR^+$ is nonzero, we show that all $y$ such that $\lim_{x\to +\infty}y(x)=0$ are singular at $2πi$-quasiperiodic arrays of points near $i\RR^+$. The array location determines and is determined by $S^+$. Such settings include the Painlevé equations $P_I$ and $P_{II}$. If $S^+=0$, then there is exactly one solution $y_0$ without singularities in $H_{2π-ε}$, and $y_0$ is entire iff $y_0=A(z,0)\equiv 0$. The singularities of $y(x)$ mirror the singularities of the Borel transform of its asymptotic expansion, $\mathcal{B}\tilde{y}$, a nonlinear analog of Stokes phenomena. If $m=1$ and $A$ is a nonlinear polynomial with $A(z,0)\not\equiv 0$ a similar conclusion holds even if $A(0,\cdot)$ is linear. This follows from the property that if $f$ is superexponentially small along $\RR^+$ and analytic in $H_π$, then $f$ is superexponentially unbounded in $H_π$, a consequence of decay estimates of Laplace transforms.

Weighted inequalities in ergodic theory via transference

We first extend Calderón's transfer principle to weighted spaces in various different settings under suitable assumptions. Then we apply our results for some inequalities on the real line obtained by the author to prove corresponding inequalities in ergodic theory and ergodic $H^1$ spaces as well.

Wavelet resolution and Sobolev regularity of Calderón-Zygmund operators on domains

Given a uniform domain $Ω\subset {\mathbb R}^d$, we resolve each element of a suitably defined class of Calderòn-Zygmund (CZ) singular integrals on $Ω$ as the linear combination of Triebel wavelet operators and paraproduct terms. Our resolution formula entails a testing type characterization, loosely in the vein of the David-Journé theorem, of weighted Sobolev space bounds in terms of Triebel-Lizorkin and tree Carleson measure norms of the paraproduct symbols, which is new already in the case $Ω={\mathbb R}^d$ with Lebesgue measure. Our characterization covers the case of compressions to $Ω$ of global CZ operators, extending and sharpening past results of Prats and Tolsa for the convolution case. The weighted estimates we obtain, particularized to the Beurling operator on a Lipschitz domain with normal to the boundary in the corresponding sharp Besov class, may be used to deduce quantitative estimates for quasiregular mappings with dilatation in the Sobolev space $W^{1,p}(Ω)$, $p>2$.
