On the invariant spectrum of $S^1$-invariant metrics on $S^2$

Abstract

A theorem of J. Hersch (1970) states that for any smooth metric on $S^2$, with total area equal to $4π$, the first nonzero eigenvalue of the Laplace operator acting on functions is less than or equal to 2 (this being the value for the standard round metric). For metrics invariant under the standard $S^1$-action on $S^2$, one can restrict the Laplace operator to the subspace of $S^1$-invariant functions and consider its spectrum there. The corresponding eigenvalues will be called invariant eigenvalues, and the purpose of this paper is to analyse its possible values. We first show that there is no general analogue of Hersch's theorem, by exhibiting explicit families of $S^1$-invariant metrics with total area $4π$ where the first invariant eigenvalue ranges through any value between 0 and $\infty$. We then restrict ourselves to $S^1$-invariant metrics that can be embedded in ${\bf R}^3$ as surfaces of revolution. For this subclass we are able to provide optimal upper bounds for all invariant eigenvalues. As a consequence, we obtain an analogue of Hersch's theorem with an optimal upper bound (greater than 2 and geometrically interesting). This subclass of metrics on $S^2$ includes all $S^1$-invariant metrics with non-negative Gauss curvature. One of the key ideas in the proofs of these results comes from symplectic geometry, and amounts to the use of the moment map of the $S^1$-action as a coordinate function on $S^2$.

A quadratic comparison of Neumann eigenvalues on thin convex domains in arbitrary dimenstion

Let $Ω\subset\mathbb R^n$ be a bounded convex domain that is thin around a chosen diameter segment. We compare its Neumann spectrum with the spectrum of that segment weighted by the $(n-1)$-dimensional volumes of its perpendicular sections. We prove an $O(\varepsilon^2)$ comparison of the mean-zero inverse operators and, consequently, an $O(\varepsilon^2)$ eigenvalue comparison for every fixed index in every dimension $n\ge2$. The constants depend only on the dimension and the eigenvalue index. Thin rectangles show that the quadratic exponent is optimal.

Residues of weighted dynamical Ihara zeta functions on finite regular graphs

A weighted dynamical version $\mathbf{Z}_f$ of the classical Ihara zeta function is presented on connected finite regular graphs, expressed in terms of weighted periodic orbit data. We establish its meromorphic continuation, with poles given by the resonances of the associated non-backtracking transfer operator acting on a suitable Banach space, and compute its residues. At simple spectral parameters, the residue of $\mathbf{Z}_f$ is identified with the invariant Ruelle distribution on the graph phase space. Combining this result with a relation obtained by Arends-Palmirotta, we further derive Patterson-Sullivan and Wigner residue formulae. This provides a finite-graph analogue of residue formulae for weighted dynamical zeta functions for geodesic flow on rank one locally symmetric spaces, in the spirit of Schütte-Barkhofen-Weich.

Uniform Eigenfunction Observability under Mixed Reflection Monodromy

We study uniform observability for Laplace eigenfunctions with mixed boundary conditions whose reflection signs do not define a scalar character. For the DDN/NND sectors of the equilateral rhombus, the resulting $\mathbb Z_2$ monodromy is resolved by a degree-two branched arithmetic translation surface of genus two. On an explicit class of admissible open sets, every exact mixed-sector eigenfunction satisfies a local $L^2$ lower bound uniform in the eigenvalue, multiplicity, and choice within the eigenspace. The proof combines exact unfolding, semiclassical defect measures, and the Veech dichotomy to exclude concentration near the saddle/conic network and inside periodic cylinders. We also obtain a reflection-overlap observability result for the full rhombus and isolate the remaining saddle-network obstruction for arbitrary open observation sets.
