Microstates free entropy and cost of equivalence relations

Abstract

We define an analog of Voiculescu's free entropy for n-tuples of unitaries (u_{1},...,u_{n}) in a tracial von Neumann algebra M, normalizing a unital diffuse abelian subalgebra B in M. Using this quantity, we define the free dimension δ_{0}(u_{1},..,u_{n}\btw B). This number depends on (u_{1},... ,u_{n}) only up ``orbit equivalence'' over B. In particular, if R is an measirable equivalence relation on [0,1] generated by n automorphisms α_{1},...,α_{n}, let u_{1},..., u_{n} be the unitaries implementing α_{1},..,α_{n} in the Feldman-Moore crossed product algebra M=W^{*}([0,1],R), and let B be the canonical copy of L^\infty functions on [0,1] inside M. In this way, we obtain an invariant δ(R)=δ_{0}(u_{1},...,u_{n},\btw B) of the equivalence relation (R). If R is treeable, δ(R) coincides with the cost C(R) of R in the sense of Gaboriau. For a general equivalence relation R posessing a finite graphing, δ(R)\leq C(R). Using the notion of free dimension, we define an dynamical entropy invariant for an automorphism of a measurable equivalence relation (or more generally of an r-discrete measure groupoid), and give examples.

$K$-Theoretic Comparison of Roe and Quasi-Local Algebras via Projections

A central question in higher index theory and operator algebras is whether the Roe algebra and the quasi-local algebra associated with a metric space of bounded geometry coincide, or at least have the same $K$-theory. In this paper, we focus on a \emph{sparse} metric space $X$. We prove the following three main results: (1) For a block-diagonal operator $T$ with uniformly bounded block-rank, $T$ is quasi-local if and only if it is in the Roe algebra. (2) In general, we discover a ghost block-diagonal projection which is quasi-local but not in the Roe algebra. (3) For a sequence of expander graphs with sufficiently large girth, the inclusion of the uniform Roe algebra into the uniform quasi-local algebra induces a \emph{non-surjective} map on their $K_0$-groups. This yields the first known $K$-theoretic distinction between the uniform Roe algebra and the uniform quasi-local algebra.

The UMD property of symmetric operator spaces

We prove that if $E$ is a UMD symmetric Banach function space on $(0,\infty)$, then $E(\mathcal{M},τ)$ is UMD for every semifinite von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{M}$ equipped with a faithful normal semifinite trace $τ$. This resolves in the affirmative an open problem that has circulated in the non-commutative world for more than four decades.

Nonamenable groups whose reduced group C*-algebras are not pure

We exhibit nonamenable groups whose reduced group C*-algebras are not pure. More precisely, if $Γ$ is any countably infinite discrete group, then the reduced group C*-algebra of the restricted wreath product $(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}) \wr Γ$ has an ideal-quotient isomorphic to $\mathcal{K}(\ell^2(Γ))$. It therefore fails to be nowhere scattered and, in particular, is not pure. Taking $Γ$ to be any nonamenable group, we thereby obtain a negative answer to a question of Thiel.
