Scaling properties of growing noninfinitesimal perturbations in space-time chaos

Abstract

We study the spatiotemporal dynamics of random spatially distributed noninfinitesimal perturbations in one-dimensional chaotic extended systems. We find that an initial perturbation of finite size $ε_0$ grows in time obeying the tangent space dynamic equations (Lyapunov vectors) up to a characteristic time $t_{\times}(ε_0) \sim b - (1/λ_{max}) \ln (ε_0)$, where $λ_{max}$ is the largest Lyapunov exponent and $b$ is a constant. For times $t < t_{\times}$ perturbations exhibit spatial correlations up to a typical distance $ξ\sim t^z$. For times larger than $t_{\times}$ finite perturbations are no longer described by tangent space equations, memory of spatial correlations is progressively destroyed and perturbations become spatiotemporal white noise. We are able to explain these results by mapping the problem to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class of surface growth.

Symmetry Transfer to Basins and Enhancement at Basin Boundaries

For an equivariant dynamical system, we prove that a compact Lyapunov-stable attractor realized as an $ω$-limit set has the same setwise symmetry group as its basin. Admissible attractor and basin symmetries therefore coincide within each fixed dynamical category. For a finite symmetry group, the index of the attractor stabilizer in the boundary stabilizer counts the symmetry-related basins sharing that full boundary. This yields a criterion for boundary symmetry enhancement, a dichotomy for attractor orbits of prime size, and a connection with Wada basins. A common boundary of $m$ disjoint open basins has at least $m$ local complementary components, which excludes smooth hypersurface patches when $m\geq 3$. Smooth flows and Newton maps illustrate the different possibilities.

Attractors and basins generated by repeated sums of prime factors of natural numbers

Integer maps are discrete dynamical systems defined on the natural numbers. In this paper, we investigate the dynamics of the shifted Alladi-Erd{\H o}s map, a one-parameter family of integer maps in which each composite number is mapped to the sum of its prime factors, while each prime is mapped to $n+A$, where $A \in \mathbb{N}$ is a fixed shift parameter. By systematically exploring the parameter space for $2 \leq A \leq 10^5$, we uncover a rich bifurcation structure characterized by the emergence, disappearance, and reorganization of attractor cycles as the shift parameter varies. We find that although several attractors may coexist for a given value of $A$, for most values of $A$, almost all natural numbers belong to the basins of only two dominant attractors. Using elementary number theoretic arguments, we explain the observed bifurcation diagram. We further characterize the attractor cycles and quantify the distribution of their basin sizes across the parameter space. Our results reveal an unexpectedly rich landscape of arithmetic dynamics arising from a remarkably simple integer map. %and provide a systematic characterization of how attractors and their basins evolve as shift parameter is varied.

Onset of random-matrix statistics in the Yukawa-Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model: Spectral correlations and Krylov complexity

The Yukawa-Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (YSYK) model, a solvable model of non-Fermi liquids with a proposed cavity-QED realization, couples $N$ complex fermions to $M$ bosons of frequency $ω_0$ through random Yukawa couplings of strength $g$, and its dynamics depends only on $R\equivω_0/g^{2/3}$. For $R\ll1$ the bosons are slow and act as a static random background in which the fermions are free, while for $R\gg1$ they are only virtually excited and generate a random four-fermion interaction of rank $M$, which is generically chaotic for $M\geq2$. Using exact diagonalization at infinite temperature, we follow the emergence of random-matrix statistics between these limits with unfolded spectral statistics and the Krylov complexity of the thermofield-double state. For complex couplings the level-spacing distribution evolves from Poisson to Gaussian-unitary-ensemble (GUE) statistics, the spectral form factor develops a correlation hole and a ramp, and the Krylov complexity evaluated on the unfolded spectrum develops a peak above its late-time plateau whose height reaches the GUE value. All diagnostics locate the onset around $R\approx0.3$, and adding boson modes moves it to smaller $R$. This delineates the parameter regime in which a cavity-QED realization would display random-matrix spectral correlations. On the other hand, real couplings give the same crossover towards Gaussian-orthogonal-ensemble (GOE) statistics, and along an interpolation between the two the peak height follows the mean gap ratio, so the peak identifies the symmetry class as well as the onset of chaos. Without unfolding the peak stays about 20$\%$ below its random-matrix value in both classes, which we trace to the non-semicircular density of states, and at larger $R$ the boson-number bands slow down the spreading of the state in Krylov space.
