A Central Partition of Molecular Conformational Space.III. Combinatorial Determination of the Volume Spanned by a Molecular System

Abstract

In the first work of this series [physics/0204035] it was shown that the conformational space of a molecule could be described to a fair degree of accuracy by means of a central hyperplane arrangement. The hyperplanes divide the espace into a hierarchical set of cells that can be encoded by the face lattice poset of the arrangement. The model however, lacked explicit rotational symmetry which made impossible to distinguish rotated structures in conformational space. This problem was solved in a second work [physics/0404052] by sorting the elementary 3D components of the molecular system into a set of morphological classes that can be properly oriented in a standard 3D reference frame. This also made possible to find a solution to the problem that is being adressed in the present work: for a molecular system immersed in a heat bath we want to enumerate the subset of cells in conformational space that are visited by the molecule in its thermal wandering. If each visited cell is a vertex on a graph with edges to the adjacent cells, here it is explained how such graph can be built.

MadVfold: accelerating NLO event generation and reducing negative weights with SIMD vectorization and GPUs

NLO simulations are essential for LHC physics analyses but are expensive, as they are not only slow but also lead to negative weights, which imply the need to simulate much larger samples of events. Folding is a powerful technique to reduce negative weights but is itself expensive. In this paper I propose ``vectorized folding'' as a new idea to speed up these calculations using SIMD and GPUs, and I present its CUDACPP-based implementation for MG5aMC in MadVfold, including its extension for unfolded NLO event generation. Preliminary results show overall speedups around 6x to 9x with folding and 3x without it. This work is based on a test-centric, LLM-assisted software development process.

Fast and Accurate Equivariant Foundation Models for Atomistic Simulation

Machine-learned interatomic potentials (MLIPs) have emerged as a transformative tool for computational materials science and chemistry, with universal potentials trained on large and diverse datasets now routinely deployed as 'foundation models' for downstream fine-tuning in targeted chemical spaces. Many scientific applications of the resulting models, such as molecular dynamics (MD), require high inference and training speeds as well as accuracy. In this work, we examine the limits of equivariant MLIPs, which directly encode physical symmetries in model architectures, to achieve these competing targets -- particularly in the regime of extremely large datasets where data efficiency is less critical. We show how this trade-off can be addressed, and present a family of foundation potentials in the NequIP and Allegro equivariant MLIP architectures which achieve leading inference speeds and strong scalability as well as excellent accuracies across a range of community benchmarks -- spanning materials discovery, thermal conductivity prediction, and near-equilibrium mechanical and thermodynamic properties. Accelerations implemented within the NequIP infrastructure now permit training of high-accuracy foundation potentials on ultra-large datasets with dramatically reduced computational cost. Alongside, we show that efforts to improve model accuracy for materials discovery should focus on dataset diversity and improved, consistent descriptions of transition metal compound energy surfaces.

Exact ballistic energy transport and emergent XXZ dynamics in an integrable three-state chain

We investigate the coupling dependence of ballistic energy transport and the emergent spin dynamics in an integrable Hermitian three-state chain that connects a clock interaction to a highly degenerate flag limit. By constructing a regular $R$-matrix to establish a globally conserved energy current, we analytically evaluate its full variance to obtain the exact, strictly positive leading high-temperature coefficient of the thermal Drude weight and the ballistic growth rate of the energy-correlation second moment. In the strong-coupling limit, the degeneracy is lifted by virtual transitions of a delocalized third-color spectator state, which generates an effective spin-$1/2$ XXZ Hamiltonian with anisotropy $Δ= -1/2$ and fundamentally selects the all-active two-color sector as the true ground state. For periodic boundaries, this virtual spectator motion introduces a positive length-changing XXZ supercharge squared that, for $L\ge4$, strictly annihilates all states within a finite, length-independent energy interval above the ground state. Consequently, we rigorously prove that the full periodic effective theory perfectly replicates the exact low-energy XXZ spectrum, including all state multiplicities, as well as its macroscopic bulk free-energy density.
