A Survey of 3 to 5.4 Micron Emission From Planetary Nebulae using SOFIA/FLITECAM

Here we present the results of an airborne 3-5.4$\mu$m spectroscopic study of three young, Carbon-rich planetary nebulae IC 5117, PNG 093.9-00.1, and BD $+$30 3639. These observations were made using the grism spectroscopy mode of the FLITECAM instrument during airborne science operations onboard NASA's Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA). The goal of this study is to characterize the 3.3 $\mu$m and 5.25 $\mu$m PAH dust emission in planetary nebulae and study the evolution of PAH features within evolved stars before their incorporation into new stellar systems in star-forming regions. Targets were selected from IRAS, KAO and ISO source lists, and were previously observed with FLITECAM on the 3-meter Shane telescope at Lick Observatory to allow direct comparison between the ground and airborne observations. We measure PAH emission equivalent width and central wavelength, classify the shape of the PAH emission, and determine the PAH/Aliphatic ratio for each target. The 3.3 $\mu$m PAH emission feature is observed in all three objects. PNG 093.9-00.1 exhibits NGC 7027-like aliphatic emission in the 3.4 to 3.6 $\mu$m region while IC 5117 and BD +30 3639 exhibit less aliphatic structure. All three PNs additionally exhibit PAH emission at 5.25 $\mu$m.

Imaging and Modeling Data from the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array

We analyze data from the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array. This is the third in a series of papers on the closure phase delay-spectrum technique designed to detect the HI 21cm emission from cosmic reionization. We present the details of the data and models employed in the power spectral analysis, and discuss limitations to the process. We compare images and visibility spectra made with HERA data, to parallel quantities generated from sky models based on the GLEAM survey, incorporating the HERA telescope model. We find reasonable agreement between images made from HERA data, with those generated from the models, down to the confusion level. For the visibility spectra, there is broad agreement between model and data across the full band of $\sim 80$MHz. However, models with only GLEAM sources do not reproduce a roughly sinusoidal spectral structure at the tens of percent level seen in the observed visibility spectra on scales $\sim 10$ MHz on 29 m baselines. We find that this structure is likely due to diffuse Galactic emission, predominantly the Galactic plane, filling the far sidelobes of the antenna primary beam. We show that our current knowledge of the frequency dependence of the diffuse sky radio emission, and the primary beam at large zenith angles, is inadequate to provide an accurate reproduction of the diffuse structure in the models. We discuss implications due to this missing structure in the models, including calibration, and in the search for the HI 21cm signal, as well as possible mitigation techniques.

Voids and Mn-rich inclusions in a (Ga,Mn)As ferromagnetic semiconductor investigated by transmission electron microscopy

Voids adjacent to both cubic (ZnS-type) and hexagonal (NiAs-type) Mn-rich nanocrystals are characterized using aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy in annealed Ga0.995Mn0.005As magnetic semiconductor specimen grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Nano-beam electron diffraction measurements suggest that the nanocrystals exhibit deviations in lattice parameter from that of bulk MnAs. In situ annealing inside the electron microscope is used to study the nucleation, coalescence, and grain growth of individual nanocrystals. After annealing at 903 K, the magnetic transition temperature of the specimen likely to be dominated by the presence of cubic ferromagnetic nanocrystals.
