ACORDE - A Cosmic Ray Detector for ALICE

ACORDE, the ALICE COsmic Ray DEtector is one of the ALICE detectors, presently under construction. It consists of an array of plastic scintillator counters placed on the three upper faces of the ALICE magnet. This array will act as Level 0 cosmic ray trigger and, together with other ALICE sub-detectors, will provide precise information on cosmic rays with primary energies around $10^{15-17}$ eV. In this paper we will describe the ACORDE detector, trigger design and electronics.

ACORDE a Cosmic Ray Detector for ALICE

ACORDE is one of the ALICE detectors, presently under construction at CERN. It consists of an array of plastic scintillator counters placed on the three upper faces of the ALICE magnet. It will act as a cosmic ray trigger, and, together with other ALICE sub-detectors, will provide precise information on cosmic rays with primary energies around $10^{15} ÷10^{-17}$ eV. Here we describe the design review of ACORDE along with the present status and integration into ALICE.

Giant magnetic anisotropy at nanoscale: overcoming the superparamagnetic limit

It has been recently observed for palladium and gold nanoparticles, that the magnetic moment at constant applied field does not change with temperature over the range comprised between 5 and 300 K. These samples with size smaller than 2.5 nm exhibit remanence up to room temperature. The permanent magnetism for so small samples up to so high temperatures has been explained as due to blocking of local magnetic moment by giant magnetic anisotropies. In this report we show, by analysing the anisotropy of thiol capped gold films, that the orbital momentum induced at the surface conduction electrons is crucial to understand the observed giant anisotropy. The orbital motion is driven by localised charge and/or spin through spin orbit interaction, that reaches extremely high values at the surfaces. The induced orbital moment gives rise to an effective field of the order of 103 T that is responsible of the giant anisotropy.

Confinement of hydrodynamic modes on a free surface and their quantum analogs

A subtle procedure to confine hydrodynamic modes on the free surface of a fluid is presented here. The experiment consists of a square vessel with an immersed square central well vibrating vertically so that the surface waves generated by the meniscus at the vessel boundary interfere with the bound states of the well. This is a classical analogy of a quantum well where some fundamental phenomena, such as bonding of states and interference between free waves and bound states, can be visualized and controlled. The above mentioned interference leads to a novel hydrodynamic transition from quasiperiodic to periodic patterns. Tight binding numerical calculations are performed here to show that our results could be transferred to design quantum confinements exhibiting electronic quasiperiodic surface states and their rational approximants for the first time.

The Performance of MEFOS, the ESO Multi-Object Fibre Spectrograph

We are describing a new multi-fibre positioner, MEFOS, that was in general use at the La Silla Observatory, and implemented at the prime focus of the ESO 3.6 m telescope. It is an arm positioner using 29 arms in a one degree field. Each arm is equipped with an individual viewing system for accurate setting and carries two spectroscopic fibres, one for the astronomical object and the other one for the sky recording needed for sky subtraction. The spectral fibres intercept 2.5 arcsec on the sky and run from the prime focus to the Cassegrain, where the B&C spectrograph is located. After describing the observational procedure, we present the first scientific results.

Asymmetries between the production of D+ and D- mesons from 500 GeV/c pi- nucleon interactions as a function of xF and pt**2

We present asymmetries between the production of D+ and D- mesons in Fermilab experiment E791 as a function of xF and pt**2. The data used here consist of 74,000 fully-reconstructed charmed mesons produced by a 500 GeV/c pi- beam on C and Pt foils. The measurements are compared to results of models which predict differences between the production of heavy-quark mesons that have a light quark in common with the beam (leading particles) and those that do not (non-leading particles). While the default models do not agree with our data, we can reach agreement with one of them, PYTHIA, by making a limited number of changes to parameters used.
