Kinetic Equilibrium Prediction at TCV using RAPTOR and FBT

We present results from a new Kinetic-Equilibrium Prediction (KEP) workflow and shot preparation for full TCV discharges, by coupling predict-first RAPTOR transport simulations with FBT inverse equilibrium calculations. RAPTOR is a 1.5D transport code which has been extensively used for plasma shot optimization and real-time modeling. We show that rapid pre-shot simulations can be performed directly using information from the pulse schedule across a wide range of plasma shapes and scenarios, given an estimate of the confinement quality factor H98(y,2) and line-averaged density. The resulting p' and TT' profiles are then provided to the pre-shot equilibrium computation performed by FBT - a static free-boundary solver routinely used at TCV - achieving convergence between the two codes in a few iterations. Finally, we show that this coupling, when integrated into the TCV shot preparation, improves the evaluation of the coil currents needed to match the target plasma shape; in particular providing an accurate estimate of critical quantities such as the internal inductance $l_i$ and normalized pressure $\beta_N$, giving more realistic information to tokamak operators about the expected pulse behavior and enabling them to adjust the plan correspondingly.

Feedforward equilibrium trajectory optimization with GSPulse

One of the common tasks required for designing new plasma scenarios or evaluating capabilities of a tokamak is to design the desired equilibria using a Grad-Shafranov (GS) equilibrium solver. However, most standard equilibrium solvers are time-independent and do not include dynamic effects such as plasma current flux consumption, induced vessel currents, or voltage constraints. Another class of tools, plasma equilibrium evolution simulators, do include time-dependent effects. These are generally structured to solve the forward problem of evolving the plasma equilibrium given feedback-controlled voltages. In this work, we introduce GSPulse, a novel algorithm for equilibrium trajectory optimization, that is more akin to a pulse planner than a pulse simulator. GSPulse includes time-dependent effects and solves the inverse problem: given a user-specified set of target equilibrium shapes, as well as limits on the coil currents and voltages, the optimizer returns trajectories of the voltages, currents, and achievable equilibria. This task is useful for scoping performance of a tokamak and exploring the space of achievable pulses. The computed equilibria satisfy both Grad-Shafranov force balance and axisymmetric circuit dynamics. The optimization is performed by restructuring the free-boundary equilibrium evolution (FBEE) equations into a form where it is computationally efficient to optimize the entire dynamic sequence. GSPulse can solve for hundreds of equilibria simultaneously within a few minutes. GSPulse has been validated against NSTX-U and MAST-U experiments and against SPARC feedback control simulations, and is being used to perform scenario design for SPARC. The computed trajectories can be used as feedforward inputs to inform and improve feedback performance. The code for GSPulse is available open-source at https://github.com/jwai-cfs/GSPulse_public.

Direct Search for keV Sterile Neutrino Dark Matter with a Stable Dysprosium Target

We investigate a new method to search for keV-scale sterile neutrinos that could account for Dark Matter. Neutrinos trapped in our galaxy could be captured on stable $^{163}$Dy if their mass is greater than 2.83 keV. Two experimental realizations are studied, an integral counting of $^{163}$Ho atoms in dysprosium-rich ores and a real-time measurement of the emerging electron spectrum in a dysprosium-based detector. The capture rates are compared to the solar neutrino and radioactive backgrounds. An integral counting experiment using several kilograms of $^{163}$Dy could reach a sensitivity for the sterile-to-active mixing angle $\sin^2\theta_{e4}$ of $10^{-5}$ significantly exceeding current laboratory limits. Mixing angles as low as $\sin^2\theta_{e4} \sim 10^{-7}$ / $\rm m_{^{163}\rm Dy}\rm{(ton)}$ could possibly be explored with a real-time experiment.

A White Paper on keV Sterile Neutrino Dark Matter

We present a comprehensive review of keV-scale sterile neutrino Dark Matter, collecting views and insights from all disciplines involved - cosmology, astrophysics, nuclear, and particle physics - in each case viewed from both theoretical and experimental/observational perspectives. After reviewing the role of active neutrinos in particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology, we focus on sterile neutrinos in the context of the Dark Matter puzzle. Here, we first review the physics motivation for sterile neutrino Dark Matter, based on challenges and tensions in purely cold Dark Matter scenarios. We then round out the discussion by critically summarizing all known constraints on sterile neutrino Dark Matter arising from astrophysical observations, laboratory experiments, and theoretical considerations. In this context, we provide a balanced discourse on the possibly positive signal from X-ray observations. Another focus of the paper concerns the construction of particle physics models, aiming to explain how sterile neutrinos of keV-scale masses could arise in concrete settings beyond the Standard Model of elementary particle physics. The paper ends with an extensive review of current and future astrophysical and laboratory searches, highlighting new ideas and their experimental challenges, as well as future perspectives for the discovery of sterile neutrinos.

The Elements of the Neutrino Mass Matrix: Allowed Ranges and Implications of Texture Zeros

We study the range of the elements of the neutrino mass matrix m_nu in the charged lepton basis. Neutrino-less double beta decay is sensitive to the ee element of m_nu. We then analyze the phenomenological implications of single texture zeros. In particular, interesting predictions for the effective mass can be obtained, in the sense that typically only little cancellation due to the Majorana phases is expected. Some cases imply constraints on the atmospheric neutrino mixing angle.

Improved Limit on theta_{13} and Implications for Neutrino Masses in Neutrino-less Double Beta Decay and Cosmology

We analyze the impact of a measurement, or of an improved bound, on theta_{13} for the determination of the effective neutrino mass in neutrino-less double beta decay and cosmology. In particular, we discuss how an improved limit on (or a specific value of) theta_{13} can influence the determination of the neutrino mass spectrum via neutrino-less double beta decay. We also discuss the interplay with improved cosmological neutrino mass searches.
