5G as Enabler for Industrie 4.0 Use Cases: Challenges and Concepts

The increasing demand for highly customized products, as well as flexible production lines, can be seen as trigger for the "fourth industrial revolution", referred to as "Industrie 4.0". Current systems usually rely on wire-line technologies to connect sensors and actuators. To enable a higher flexibility such as moving robots or drones, these connections need to be replaced by wireless technologies in the future. Furthermore, this facilitates the renewal of brownfield deployments to address Industrie 4.0 requirements. This paper proposes representative use cases, which have been examined in the German Tactile Internet 4.0 (TACNET 4.0) research project. In order to analyze these use cases, this paper identifies the main challenges and requirements of communication networks in Industrie 4.0 and discusses the applicability of 5th generation wireless communication systems (5G).

Thermodynamic Formalism on the Skorokhod space: the continuous time Ruelle operator, entropy, pressure, entropy production and expansiveness

Consider the semi-flow given by the continuous time shift $\Theta_t:\mathcal{D} \to \mathcal{D} $, $t \geq 0$, acting on the $\mathcal{D} $ of \textit{c\`{a}dl\`{a}g} paths $w: [0,\infty) \to S^1$, where $S^1$ is the unitary circle. We equip the space $\mathcal{D} $ with the Skorokhod metric, and we show that the semi-flow is expanding. We also introduce a stochastic semi-group $e^{t\, L}$, $t \geq 0,$ where $L$ acts linearly on continuous functions $f:S^1\to\mathbb{R}$. This stochastic semigroup and an initial vector of probability $\pi$ define an associated stationary shift-invariant probability $\mathbb{P}$ on the Polish space $\mathcal{D} $. Given such $\mathbb{P}$ and an H\"older potential $V:S^1 \to \mathbb{R}$, we define a continuous time Ruelle operator, which is described by a family of linear operators $ \mathbb{L}^t_V$, $t\geq 0,$ acting on continuous functions $\varphi: S^1 \to \mathbb{R}$. More precisely, given any H\"older $V$ and $t\geq 0$, the operator $ \mathbb{L}^t_V$, is defined by $\varphi \to \psi(y) = \mathbb{L}^t_V(\varphi)(y)= \int_{w(t)=y} e^{ \int_0^t V(w(s)) ds} \varphi (w(0)) d \mathbb{P}(w).$ For some specific parameters we show the existence of an eigenvalue $\lambda_V$ and an associated H\"older eigenfunction $\varphi_V>0$.After a coboundary procedure we obtain another stochastic semigroup, with infinitesimal generator $L_V$, and this will define a new probability $\mathbb{P}_V$ on $\mathcal{D}$, which we call the Gibbs (or, equilibrium) probability for the potential $V$. In this case, we define entropy for some shift-invariant probabilities on $\mathcal{D}$, and we consider a variational problem of pressure. Finally, we define entropy production and present our main result: we analyze its relation with time-reversal and symmetry of $L$. We also show that the continuous-time shift $\Theta_t$, acting on the Skorohod space $D$, is expanding.

Diffusion Processes: entropy, Gibbs states and the continuous time Ruelle operator

We consider a Riemmaniann compact manifold $M$, the associated Laplacian $\Delta$ and the corresponding Brownian motion $X_t$, $t\geq 0.$ Given a Lipschitz function $V:M\to\mathbb R$ we consider the operator $\frac{1}{2}\Delta+V$, which acts on differentiable functions $f: M\to\mathbb R$ via the operator $$\frac{1}{2} \Delta f(x)+\,V(x)f(x) ,$$ for all $x\in M$. Denote by $P_t^V$, $t \geq 0,$ the semigroup acting on functions $f: M\to\mathbb R$ given by $$P_{t}^V (f)(x)\,:=\, \mathbb E_{x} \big[e^{\int_0^{t} V(X_r)\,dr} f(X_t)\big].\,$$ We will show that this semigroup is a continuous-time version of the discrete-time Ruelle operator. Consider the positive differentiable eigenfunction $F: M \to \mathbb{R}$ associated to the main eigenvalue $\lambda$ for the semigroup $P_t^V$, $t \geq 0$. From the function $F$, in a procedure similar to the one used in the case of discrete-time Thermodynamic Formalism, we can associate via a coboundary procedure a certain stationary Markov semigroup. The probability on the Skhorohod space obtained from this new stationary Markov semigroup can be seen as a stationary Gibbs state associated with the potential $V$. We define entropy, pressure, the continuous-time Ruelle operator and we present a variational principle of pressure for such a setting.

European Strategy for Particle Physics -- Accelerator R&D Roadmap

The 2020 update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics emphasised the importance of an intensified and well-coordinated programme of accelerator R&D, supporting the design and delivery of future particle accelerators in a timely, affordable and sustainable way. This report sets out a roadmap for European accelerator R&D for the next five to ten years, covering five topical areas identified in the Strategy update. The R&D objectives include: improvement of the performance and cost-performance of magnet and radio-frequency acceleration systems; investigations of the potential of laser / plasma acceleration and energy-recovery linac techniques; and development of new concepts for muon beams and muon colliders. The goal of the roadmap is to document the collective view of the field on the next steps for the R&D programme, and to provide the evidence base to support subsequent decisions on prioritisation, resourcing and implementation.

Solution nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy on a nanostructured diamond chip

We demonstrate nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy of picoliter-volume solutions with a nanostructured diamond chip. Using optical interferometric lithography, diamond surfaces were nanostructured with dense, high-aspect-ratio nanogratings, enhancing the surface area by more than a factor of 15 over mm^2 regions of the chip. The nanograting sidewalls were doped with nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers so that more than 10 million NV centers in a (25 micrometer)^2 laser spot are located close enough to the diamond surface (5 nm) to detect the NMR spectrum of 1 pL of fluid lying within adjacent nanograting grooves. The platform was used to perform 1H and 19F NMR spectroscopy at room temperature in magnetic fields below 50 mT. Using a solution of CsF in glycerol, we demonstrate that 4 +/- 2 x 10^12 19F spins in a 1 pL volume, can be detected with a signal-to-noise ratio of 3 in 1 s integration. This represents nearly two orders of magnitude improvement in concentration sensitivity over previous NV and picoliter NMR studies.

Non-resonant feeding of photonic crystal nanocavity modes by quantum dots

We experimentally probe the non-resonant feeding of photons into the optical mode of a two dimensional photonic crystal nanocavity from the discrete emission from a quantum dot. For a strongly coupled system of a single exciton and the cavity mode, we track the detuning-dependent photoluminescence intensity of the polariton peaks at different lattice temperatures. At low temperatures we observe a clear asymmetry in the emission intensity depending on whether the exciton is at higher or lower energy than the cavity mode. At high temperatures this asymmetry vanishes when the probabilities to emit or absorb a phonon become similar. For a different dot-cavity system where the cavity mode is detuned by \Delta E>5 meV to lower energy than the single exciton transitions emission from the mode remains correlated with the quantum dot as demonstrated unambiguously by cross-correlation photon counting experiments. By monitoring the temporal evolution of the photoluminescence spectrum, we show that feeding of photons into the mode occurs from multi-exciton transitions. We observe a clear anti-correlation of the mode and single exciton emission; the mode emission quenches as the population in the system reduces towards the single exciton level whilst the intensity of the mode emission tracks the multi-exciton transitions.

Cavity-resonant excitation for efficient single photon generation

We present an efficiently pumped single photon source based on single quantum dots (QD) embedded in photonic crystal nanocavities. Resonant excitation of a QD via a higher order cavity mode results in a 100$\times$ reduced optical power at the saturation onset of the photoluminescence, compared with excitation at the same frequency, after the cavity mode is detuned. Furthermore, we demonstrate that this excitation scheme leads to selective excitation of QDs coupled to the cavity by comparing photoluminescence and auto-correlation spectra for the same excitation wavelength with and without the cavity mode. This provides much cleaner conditions for single photon generation.

Lamination And Microstructuring Technology for a Bio-Cell Multiwell array

Microtechnology becomes a versatile tool for biological and biomedical applications. Microwells have been established long but remained non-intelligent up to now. Merging new fabrication techniques and handling concepts with microelectronics enables to realize intelligent microwells suitable for future improved cancer treatment. The described technology depicts the basis for the fabrication of a elecronically enhanced microwell. Thin aluminium sheets are structured by laser micro machining and laminated successively to obtain registration tolerances of the respective layers of 5..10Â$μ$m. The microwells lasermachined into the laminate are with 50..80Â$μ$m diameter, allowing to hold individual cells within the well. The individual process steps are described and results on the microstructuring are given.

Investigation of Non Resonant Dot - Cavity Coupling in Two Dimensional Photonic Crystal Nanocavities

We study the optical emission from single semiconductor quantum dots coupled to the optical modes of photonic crystal nanocavities. For dots that are both spectrally and spatially coupled, auto-correlation measurements reveal efficient single photon generation, with a drastically reduced lifetime due to the Purcell-effect. However, the multi-photon emission probability is enhanced compared to the same QD transition when it is detuned from the cavity mode by controlled $N_2$-deposition. This indicates the presence of an emission background that is shown to be related to the dot using photon cross-correlation spectroscopy. Photon temporal correlations persist even for large spectral detunings beyond $Δλ\sim-10 nm$, excluding the intrinsic QD continuum and phonon mediated processes as being responsible for the cavity mode emission background. We propose a mechanism based on photon induced shake up processes in the charged quantum dots, enhanced by the optical cavity.
