Analytic index theory and spectral flow in real Hilbert $C^*$-modules

We consider the analytic index and spectral flow of Fredholm operators on Hilbert $C^*$-modules. Our spaces and algebras are equipped with a real structure, so the analytic index and spectral flow takes value in the real $K$-theory group of a $\sigma$-unital $C^*$-algebra. We use Van Daele $K$-theory, which allows us to treat the eight real $K$-theory groups and the two complex groups on an equal footing. We provide a general definition of the analytic index for Clifford anti-linear and skew-adjoint Fredholm operators as well as self-adjoint and odd Fredholm operators. Our definition of spectral flow and its basic properties are valid for Wahl-continuous paths of Fredholm operators on a real Hilbert $C^*$-module. We also provide an analytic approach to the spectral flow as a decomposition into a finite sum of relative indices. Furthermore, we prove a real version of the Robbin-Salamon theorem, relating the spectral flow to a Fredholm index. Our description of the index and spectral flow relies on various isomorphisms between Kasparov's $KKR$-theory and Van Daele $K$-theory, which we systematically describe in the Appendix.

Comparison of Levi-Civita connections in noncommutative geometry

We compare the constructions of Levi-Civita connections for noncommutative algebras developed in arXiv:1505.07330, arXiv:1809.06721, arXiv:2403.13735. The assumptions in these various constructions differ, but when they are all defined, we provide direct translations between them. An essential assumption is that the (indefinite) Hermitian inner product on differential forms/vector fields provides an isomorphism with the module dual. By exploiting our translations and clarifying the simplifications that occur for centred bimodules, we extend the existence results for Hermitian torsion-free connections in arXiv:1505.07330, arXiv:1809.06721.

Conformal transformations and equivariance in unbounded KK-theory

We extend unbounded Kasparov theory to encompass conformal group and quantum group equivariance. This new framework allows us to treat conformal actions on both manifolds and noncommutative spaces. As examples, we present unbounded representatives of Kasparov's $\gamma$-element for the real and complex Lorentz groups and display the conformal $SL_q(2)$-equivariance of the standard spectral triple of the Podle\'s sphere. In pursuing descent for conformally equivariant cycles, we are led to a new framework for representing Kasparov classes. Our new representatives are unbounded, possess a dynamical quality, and also include known twisted spectral triples. We define an equivalence relation on these new representatives whose classes form an abelian group surjecting onto KK. The technical innovation which underpins these results is a novel multiplicative perturbation theory. By these means, we obtain Kasparov classes from the bounded transform with minimal side conditions.

Curvature and Weitzenbock formula for the Podle\'{s} quantum sphere

We prove that there is a unique Levi-Civita connection on the one-forms of the Dabrowski-Sitarz spectral triple for the Podle\'{s} sphere $S^{2}_{q}$. We compute the full curvature tensor, as well as the Ricci and scalar curvature of the Podle\'{s} sphere using the framework of \cite{MRLC}. The scalar curvature is a constant, and as the parameter $q\to 1$, the scalar curvature converges to the classical value $2$. We prove a generalised Weitzenbock formula for the spinor bundle, which differs from the classical Lichnerowicz formula for $q\neq 1$, yet recovers it for $q\to 1$.

Spectral flow and Levinson's theorem for Schr\"o dinger operators

We use spectral flow to present a new proof of Levinson's theorem for Schr\"{o}dinger operators on $\mathbb{R}^n$ with smooth compactly supported potential. Our proof is valid in all dimensions and in the presence of resonances. The statement is expressed in terms of the spectral shift function and the ``high energy corrected time delay'' following Guillop\'{e} and others.

Curvature and Weitzenbock formula for spectral triples

Using the Levi-Civita connection on the noncommutative differential one-forms of a spectral triple $(\B,\H,\D)$, we define the full Riemann curvature tensor, the Ricci curvature tensor and scalar curvature. We give a definition of Dirac spectral triples and derive a general Weitzenbock formula for them. We apply these tools to $\theta$-deformations of compact Riemannian manifolds. We show that the Riemann and Ricci tensors transform naturally under $\theta$-deformation, whereas the connection Laplacian, Clifford representation of the curvature and the scalar curvature are all invariant under deformation.

Existence and uniqueness of the Levi-Civita connection on noncommutative differential forms

We combine Hilbert module and algebraic techniques to give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of an Hermitian torsion-free connection on the bimodule of differential one-forms of a first order differential calculus. In the presence of the extra structure of a bimodule connection, we give sufficient conditions for uniqueness. We prove that any $\theta$-deformation of a compact Riemannian manifold admits a unique Hermitian torsion-free bimodule connection and provide an explicit construction of it. Specialising to classical Riemannian manifolds yields a novel construction of the Levi-Civita connection on the cotangent bundle.

Morphisms of Cuntz-Pimsner algebras from completely positive maps

We introduce positive correspondences as right C*-modules with left actions given by completely positive maps. Positive correspondences form a semi-category that contains the C*-correspondence (Enchilada) category as a "retract". Kasparov's KSGNS construction provides a semi-functor from this semi-category onto the C*-correspondence category. The need for left actions by completely positive maps appears naturally when we consider morphisms between Cuntz-Pimsner algebras, and we describe classes of examples arising from projections on C*-correspondences and Fock spaces, as well as examples from conjugation by bi-Hilbertian bimodules of finite index.

Splittings for C*-correspondences and strong shift equivalence

We present an extension of the notion of in-splits from symbolic dynamics to topological graphs and, more generally, to C*-correspondences. We demonstrate that in-splits provide examples of strong shift equivalences of C*-correspondences. Furthermore, we provide a streamlined treatment of Muhly, Pask, and Tomforde's proof that any strong shift equivalence of regular C*-correspondences induces a (gauge-equivariant) Morita equivalence between Cuntz-Pimsner algebras. For topological graphs, we prove that in-splits induce diagonal-preserving gauge-equivariant *-isomorphisms in analogy with the results for Cuntz-Krieger algebras. Additionally, we examine the notion of out-splits for C*-correspondences.

Levinson's theorem as an index pairing

We build on work of Kellendonk, Richard, Tiedra de Aldecoa and others to show that the wave operators for Schr\"{o}dinger scattering theory on $\mathbb{R}^n$ generically have a particular form. As a consequence, Levinson's theorem can be interpreted as the pairing of the $K$-theory class of the unitary scattering operator and the $K$-homology class of the generator of the group of dilations.

The Friedrichs angle and alternating projections in Hilbert $C^{*}$-modules

Let $B$ be a $C^{*}$-algebra, $X$ a Hilbert $C^{*}$-module over $B$ and $M,N\subset X$ a pair of complemented submodules. We prove the $C^{*}$-module version of von Neumann's alternating projections theorem: the sequence $(P_{N}P_{M})^{n}$ is Cauchy in the $*$-strong module topology if and only if $M\cap N$ is the complement of $\overline{M^{\perp}+N^{\perp}}$. In this case, the $*$-strong limit of $(P_{M}P_{N})^{n}$ is the orthogonal projection onto $M\cap N$. We use this result and the local-global principle to show that the cosine of the Friedrichs angle $c(M,N)$ between any pair of complemented submodules $M,N\subset X$ is well-defined and that $c(M,N)<1$ if and only if $M\cap N$ is complemented and $M+N$ is closed.

A Cuntz-Pimsner Model for the $C^*$-algebra of a Graph of Groups

We provide a Cuntz-Pimsner model for graph of groups $C^*$-algebras. This allows us to compute the $K$-theory of a range of examples and show that graph of groups $C^*$-algebras can be realised as Exel-Pardo algebras. We also make a preliminary investigation of whether the crossed product algebra of Baumslag-Solitar groups acting on the boundary of certain trees satisfies Poincar\'e duality in $KK$-theory. By constructing a $K$-theory duality class we compute the $K$-homology of these crossed products.

The Cayley transform in complex, real and graded $K$-theory

We use the Cayley transform to provide an explicit isomorphism at the level of cycles from van Daele $K$-theory to $KK$-theory for graded $C^*$-algebras with a real structure. Isomorphisms between $KK$-theory and complex or real $K$-theory for ungraded $C^*$-algebras are a special case of this map. In all cases our map is compatible with the computational techniques required in physical and geometrical applications, in particular index pairings and Kasparov products. We provide applications to real $K$-theory and topological phases of matter.

Curvature of differentiable Hilbert modules and Kasparov modules

In this paper we introduce the curvature of densely defined universal connections on Hilbert $C^{*}$-modules relative to a spectral triple (or unbounded Kasparov module), obtaining a well-defined curvature operator. Fixing the spectral triple, we find that modulo junk forms, the curvature only depends on the represented form of the universal connection. We refine our definition of curvature to factorisations of unbounded Kasparov modules. Our refined definition recovers all the curvature data of a Riemannian submersion of compact manifolds, viewed as a $KK$-factorisation.

The KO-valued spectral flow for skew-adjoint Fredholm operators

In this article we give a comprehensive treatment of a `Clifford module flow' along paths in the skew-adjoint Fredholm operators on a real Hilbert space that takes values in KO${}_{*}(\mathbb{R})$ via the Clifford index of Atiyah-Bott-Shapiro. We develop its properties for both bounded and unbounded skew-adjoint operators including an axiomatic characterization. Our constructions and approach are motivated by the principle that \[ \text{spectral flow} = \text{Fredholm index}. \] That is, we show how the KO--valued spectral flow relates to a KO-valued index by proving a Robbin-Salamon type result. The Kasparov product is also used to establish a spectral flow $=$ Fredholm index result at the level of bivariant K-theory. We explain how our results incorporate previous applications of $\mathbb{Z}/ 2\mathbb{Z}$-valued spectral flow in the study of topological phases of matter.
