Equivariantly slicing strongly negative amphichiral knots

We prove obstructions to a strongly negative amphichiral knot bounding an equivariant slice disk in the 4-ball using the determinant, Spinc-structures and Donaldson's theorem. Of the 16 slice strongly negative amphichiral knots with 12 or fewer crossings, our obstructions show that 8 are not equivariantly slice, we exhibit equivariant ribbon diagrams for 5 others, and the remaining 3 are unknown. Finally, we give an obstruction to a knot being strongly negative amphichiral in terms of Heegaard Floer correction terms.

Equivariant 4-genera of strongly invertible and periodic knots

We study the equivariant genera of strongly invertible and periodic knots. Our techniques include some new strongly invertible concordance group invariants, Donaldson's theorem, and the g-signature. We find many new examples where the equivariant 4-genus is larger than the 4-genus.

Links all of whose cyclic branched covers are L-spaces

We show that for the pretzel knots $K_k=P(3,-3,-2k-1)$, the $n$-fold cyclic branched covers are L-spaces for all $n\geq 1$. In addition, we show that the knots $K_k$ with $k\geq 1$ are quasipositive and slice, answering a question of Boileau-Boyer-Gordon. We also extend results of Teragaito giving examples of two-bridge knots with all L-space cyclic branched covers to a family of two-bridge links.

Smoothly embedding Seifert fibered spaces in $S^4$

Using an obstruction based on Donaldson's theorem, we derive strong restrictions on when a Seifert fibered space $Y = F(e; \frac{p_1}{q_1}, \ldots, \frac{p_k}{q_k})$ over an orientable base surface $F$ can smoothly embed in $S^4$. This allows us to classify precisely when $Y$ smoothly embeds provided $e > k/2$, where $e$ is the normalized central weight and $k$ is the number of singular fibers. Based on these results and an analysis of the Neumann-Siebenmann invariant $\overline{\mu}$, we make some conjectures concerning Seifert fibered spaces which embed in $S^4$. Finally, we also provide some applications to doubly slice Montesinos links, including a classification of the smoothly doubly slice odd pretzel knots up to mutation.

The realization problem for non-integer Seifert fibered surgeries

Conjecturally, the only knots in $S^3$ with non-integer surgeries producing Seifert fibered spaces are torus knots and cables of torus knots. In this paper, we make progress on the associated realization problem. Let $Y$ be a small Seifert fibered space arising by $p/q$-surgery on a knot in $S^3$, where $p/q$ is positive and a non-integer. Let $e$ denote the weight of the central vertex in the minimal star-shaped plumbing that $Y$ bounds. We show that if $e\leq -2$ or $e\geq 3$, then $Y$ can be obtained by $p/q$-surgery on a torus knot or a cable of a torus knot.

On Seifert fibered spaces bounding definite manifolds

We establish an inequality which gives strong restrictions on when the standard definite plumbing intersection lattice of a Seifert fibered space over $S^2$ can embed into a standard diagonal lattice, and give two applications. First, we answer a question of Neumann-Zagier on the relationship between Donaldson's theorem and Fintushel-Stern's $R$-invariant. We also give a short proof of the characterisation of Seifert fibered spaces which smoothly bound rational homology $S^1 \times D^3$'s.

The classification of quasi-alternating Montesinos links

In this note, we complete the classification of quasi-alternating Montesinos links. We show that the quasi-alternating Montesinos links are precisely those identified independently by Qazaqzeh-Chbili-Qublan and Champanerkar-Ording. A consequence of our proof is that a Montesinos link $L$ is quasi-alternating if and only if its double branched cover is an L-space, and bounds both a positive definite and a negative definite 4-manifold with vanishing first homology.

Non-geometric veering triangulations

Recently, Ian Agol introduced a class of "veering" ideal triangulations for mapping tori of pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms of surfaces punctured along the singular points. These triangulations have very special combinatorial properties, and Agol asked if these are "geometric", i.e. realised in the complete hyperbolic metric with all tetrahedra positively oriented. This paper describes a computer program Veering, building on the program Trains by Toby Hall, for generating these triangulations starting from a description of the homeomorphism as a product of Dehn twists. Using this we obtain the first examples of non-geometric veering triangulations; the smallest example we have found is a triangulation with 13 tetrahedra.
