Transgressing the algebraic coarse character map

We pursue an old conjecture of John Roe about the algebraic K-theory of the algebra of finite propagation, locally trace-class operators, namely that transgressing the algebraic coarse character map on this algebra to a Higson dominated corona coincides with the usual Chern character on the corona.

The relative index in coarse index theory and submanifold obstructions to uniform positive scalar curvature

We provide a coarse version of the relative index of Gromov and Lawson and thoroughly establish all of its basic properties. As an application, we discuss a general procedure to construct wrong way maps on the $K$-theory of the Roe algebra mapping the coarse index class of the Dirac operator of a manifold to the one of a suitably embedded submanifold of arbitrary codimension, thereby establishing an abstract machinery to find obstructions to uniform positive scalar curvature coming from these submanifolds.

Quantum Simulation of Nonlinear Dynamical Systems Using Repeated Measurement

We present a quantum algorithm based on repeated measurement to solve initial-value problems for nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs), which may be generated from partial differential equations in plasma physics. We map a dynamical system to a Hamiltonian form, where the Hamiltonian matrix is a function of dynamical variables. To advance in time, we measure expectation values from the previous time step, and evaluate the Hamiltonian function classically, which introduces stochasticity into the dynamics. We then perform standard quantum Hamiltonian simulation over a short time, using the evaluated constant Hamiltonian matrix. This approach requires evolving an ensemble of quantum states, which are consumed each step to measure required observables. We apply this approach to the classic logistic and Lorenz systems, in both integrable and chaotic regimes. Out analysis shows that solutions' accuracy is influenced by both the stochastic sampling rate and the nature of the dynamical system.

Groups acting amenably on their Higson corona

We investigate groups that act amenably on their Higson corona (also known as bi-exact groups) and we provide reformulations of this in relation to the stable Higson corona, nuclearity of crossed products and to positive type kernels. We further investigate implications of this in relation to the Baum-Connes conjecture, and prove that Gromov hyperbolic groups have isomorphic equivariant K-theories of their Gromov boundary and their stable Higson corona.

Correspondence between open bosonic systems and stochastic differential equations

Bosonic mean-field theories can approximate the dynamics of systems of $n$ bosons provided that $n \gg 1$. We show that there can also be an exact correspondence at finite $n$ when the bosonic system is generalized to include interactions with the environment and the mean-field theory is replaced by a stochastic differential equation. When the $n \to \infty$ limit is taken, the stochastic terms in this differential equation vanish, and a mean-field theory is recovered. Besides providing insight into the differences between the behavior of finite quantum systems and their classical limits given by $n \to \infty$, the developed mathematics can provide a basis for quantum algorithms that solve some stochastic nonlinear differential equations. We discuss conditions on the efficiency of these quantum algorithms, with a focus on the possibility for the complexity to be polynomial in the log of the stochastic system size. A particular system with the form of a stochastic discrete nonlinear Schr\"{o}dinger equation is analyzed in more detail.

Paschke duality and assembly maps

We construct a natural transformation between two versions of $G$-equivariant $K$-homology with coefficients in a $G$-$C^{*}$-category for a countable discrete group $G$. Its domain is a coarse geometric $K$-homology and its target is the usual analytic $K$-homology. Following classical terminology, we call this transformation the Paschke transformation. We show that under certain finiteness assumptions on a $G$-space $X$, the Paschke transformation is an equivalence on $X$. As an application, we provide a direct comparison of the homotopy theoretic Davis-L\"uck assembly map with Kasparov's analytic assembly map appearing in the Baum-Connes conjecture.

A stable $\infty$-category for equivariant $KK$-theory

For a countable group $G$ we construct a small, idempotent complete, symmetric monoidal, stable $\infty$-category $\mathrm{KK}^{G}_{\mathrm{sep}}$ whose homotopy category recovers the triangulated equivariant Kasparov category of separable $G$-$C^*$-algebras, and exhibit its universal property. Likewise, we consider an associated presentably symmetric monoidal, stable $\infty$-category $\mathrm{KK}^{G}$ which receives a symmetric monoidal functor $\mathrm{kk}^{G}$ from possibly non-separable $G$-$C^*$-algebras and discuss its universal property. In addition to the symmetric monoidal structures, we construct various change-of-group functors relating these KK-categories for varying $G$. We use this to define and establish key properties of a (spectrum valued) equivariant, locally finite $K$-homology theory on proper and locally compact $G$-topological spaces, allowing for coefficients in arbitrary $G$-$C^*$-algebras. Finally, we extend the functor $\mathrm{kk}^{G}$ from $G$-$C^*$-algebras to $G$-$C^*$-categories. These constructions are key in a companion paper about a form of equivariant Paschke duality and assembly maps.

Linear embedding of nonlinear dynamical systems and prospects for efficient quantum algorithms

The simulation of large nonlinear dynamical systems, including systems generated by discretization of hyperbolic partial differential equations, can be computationally demanding. Such systems are important in both fluid and kinetic computational plasma physics. This motivates exploring whether a future error-corrected quantum computer could perform these simulations more efficiently than any classical computer. We describe a method for mapping any finite nonlinear dynamical system to an infinite linear dynamical system (embedding) and detail three specific cases of this method that correspond to previously-studied mappings. Then we explore an approach for approximating the resulting infinite linear system with finite linear systems (truncation). Using a number of qubits only logarithmic in the number of variables of the nonlinear system, a quantum computer could simulate truncated systems to approximate output quantities if the nonlinearity is sufficiently weak. Other aspects of the computational efficiency of the three detailed embedding strategies are also discussed.

Topological equivariant coarse K-homology

For a $C^{*}$-category with a strict $G$-action we construct examples of equivariant coarse homology theories. To this end we first introduce versions of Roe categories of objects in $C^{*}$-categories which are controlled over bornological coarse spaces, and then apply a homological functor. These equivariant coarse homology theories are then employed to verify that certain functors on the orbit category are CP-functors. This fact has consequences for the injectivity of assembly maps.

Additive C*-categories and K-theory

We review the notions of a multiplier category and the $W^{*}$-envelope of a $C^{*}$-category. We then consider the notion of an orthogonal sum of a (possibly infinite) family of objects in a $C^{*}$-category. Furthermore, we construct reduced crossed products of $C^{*}$-categories with groups. We axiomatize the basic properties of the $K$-theory for $C^{*}$-categories in the notion of a homological functor. We then study various rigidity properties of homological functors in general, and special additional features of the $K$-theory of $C^{*}$-categories. As an application we construct and study interesting functors on the orbit category of a group from $C^{*}$-categorical data.

Slant products on the Higson-Roe exact sequence

We construct a slant product $/ \colon \mathrm{S}_p(X \times Y) \times \mathrm{K}_{1-q}(\mathfrak{c}^{\mathrm{red}}Y) \to \mathrm{S}_{p-q}(X)$ on the analytic structure group of Higson and Roe and the K-theory of the stable Higson corona of Emerson and Meyer. The latter is the domain of the co-assembly map $\mu^\ast \colon \mathrm{K}_{1-\ast}(\mathfrak{c}^{\mathrm{red}}Y) \to \mathrm{K}^\ast(Y)$. We obtain such products on the entire Higson--Roe sequence. They imply injectivity results for external product maps. Our results apply to products with aspherical manifolds whose fundamental groups admit coarse embeddings into Hilbert space. To conceptualize the class of manifolds where this method applies, we say that a complete $\mathrm{spin}^{\mathrm{c}}$-manifold is Higson-essential if its fundamental class is detected by the co-assembly map. We prove that coarsely hypereuclidean manifolds are Higson-essential. We draw conclusions for positive scalar curvature metrics on product spaces, particularly on non-compact manifolds. We also obtain equivariant versions of our constructions and discuss related problems of exactness and amenability of the stable Higson corona.

Quantum Algorithm for the Vlasov Equation

The Vlasov-Maxwell system of equations, which describes classical plasma physics, is extremely challenging to solve, even by numerical simulation on powerful computers. By linearizing and assuming a Maxwellian background distribution function, we convert the Vlasov-Maxwell system into a Hamiltonian simulation problem. Then for the limiting case of electrostatic Landau damping, we design and verify a quantum algorithm, appropriate for a future error-corrected universal quantum computer. While the classical simulation has costs that scale as $\mathcal{O}(N_v t)$ for a velocity grid with $N_v$ grid points and simulation time $t$, our quantum algorithm scales as $\mathcal{O}(\text{polylog}(N_v) t/\delta)$ where $\delta$ is the measurement error, and weaker scalings have been dropped. Extensions, including electromagnetics and higher dimensions, are discussed. A quantum computer could efficiently handle a high-resolution, six-dimensional phase-space grid, but the $1/\delta$ cost factor to extract an accurate result remains a difficulty. This paper provides insight into the possibility of someday achieving efficient plasma simulation on a quantum computer.

Strong Novikov conjecture for low degree cohomology and exotic group C*-algebras

We strengthen a result of Hanke-Schick about the strong Novikov conjecture for low degree cohomology by showing that their non-vanishing result for the maximal group C*-algebra holds for many other exotic group C*-algebras, in particular the one associated to the smallest strongly Morita compatible and exact crossed product functor used in the new version of the Baum-Connes conjecture. To achieve this we provide a Fell absorption principle for certain exotic crossed product functors.

Polynomially weighted $\ell^p$-completions and group homology

We introduce polynomially weighted $\ell^p$-norms on the bar complex of a finitely generated group. We prove that, for groups of polynomial or exponential growth, the homology of the completed complex does not depend on the value of $p$ in the range $(1,\infty)$.

Homotopy theory with marked additive categories

We construct combinatorial model category structures on the categories of (marked) categories and (marked) pre-additive categories, and we characterize (marked) additive categories as fibrant objects in a Bousfield localization of pre-additive categories. These model category structures are used to present the corresponding $\infty$-categories obtained by inverting equivalences. We apply these results to explicitly calculate various limits and colimits in these $\infty$-categories.

Injectivity results for coarse homology theories

We show injectivity results for assembly maps using equivariant coarse homology theories with transfers. Our method is based on the descent principle and applies to a large class of linear groups or, more general, groups with finite decomposition complexity.

Transfers in coarse homology

We enlarge the category of bornological coarse spaces by adding transfer morphisms and introduce the notion of an equivariant coarse homology theory with transfers. We then show that equivariant coarse algebraic $K$-homology and equivariant coarse ordinary homology can be extended to equivariant coarse homology theories with transfers. In the case of a finite group we observe that equivariant coarse homology theories with transfers provide Mackey functors. We express standard constructions with Mackey functors in terms of coarse geometry, and we demonstrate the usage of transfers in order to prove injectivity results about assembly maps.
